Veronica Romey is a full-time fitness professional, who has centered most of her life on good health and fitness even before it became the 'thing to do'.

Her expertise includes over 20 years of self-practice literally changing the shape of her own body, 14 years as a group instructor of aerobics, strength training, aquatics and fitball. She was a member of the Body Power aerobics teaching team on PBS in Portland, OR.

Veronica is a certified ACE (American Council on Exercise) personal trainer with over 10 years of training experience. When first introduced to Pilates in 1999, she had an epiphany "This is what I want to do."

A year later and with over 500 hours of training, Veronica received formal certification to teach both the equipment and floor exercises.

She then decided to dedicated herself to fitness fulltime and opened Centergy (center your energy) Body Conditioning Studio in April 2000.

What is Pilates

Pilates Method of Conditioning is a system of movement and exercise created and developed in the early 1900 by athlete and physical therapy pioneer, Josephy H. Pilates.

Pilates incorporates Eastern and Western philosophies of physical and mental conditioning. This creates a fusion of mind, body and spirit functioning perfectly as an integrated whole.

Pilates focuses on firming and strengthening the "core" muscles of the abdominals, gluteals and lower back resulting in greater ease of movement for the entire body.

Pilates is a full body conditioning program for strengthening and stretching that can be done on the floor or on specialized equipment using the assistance and resistance of pulleys and springs.

The principals on which the Pilates Method of Conditioning is based are concentration, control, center, fluidity, precision, breath, imagination, intuition and integration.

Pilates Effective for Low-Back Pain

Low-back pain is the most common cause of job-related disability in the United States, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Among neurological ailments, only headache is more prevalent.

Recent research supports the effectiveness of Pilates exercise for low-back pain. According to a small, randomized, controlled study published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (2006; 36 [7], 472-84), participants who practiced Pilates over a 4-week period experienced more relief from their symptoms than those who went through typical treatment programs.

In light of the growing popularity of Pilates in therapeutic settings, researchers from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, decided to test whether Pilates exercises were effective in improving the condition of patients. The investigators randomly assigned 39 active adults ages 20-55 with chronic low-back pain to either a Pilates training group or a control group. The experimental group exercised on Pilates equipment, while the control group received the usual care provided to individuals seeking medical help for low-back pain. ("Usual care" included consulting with a physician and other healthcare professionals and specialists.)

Post-testing revealed that the Pilates participants had significantly lower levels of functional disability and pain intensity than the control subjects. A year later, the Pilates participants had maintained their physical improvements.

Is Pilates for everyone?

  • 63-year-old man: After six months of treatment with drugs and physical therapy for severe sciatica pain, I tried Pilates with Veronica. Two weeks later, I was pain free.

  • 58-year-old athlete: Pilates has improved flexibility and strength throughout by range of motion. This translates into improved golf and shooting swings. I've achieved better performance and more stamina in both sports.

  • 70-year-old man: No more sore knees, I'm 1 ˝ inch taller and feeling great.

  • 55-year-old female body builder: I like the way I feel, move and look. Graceful power.

  • 19-year-old male ski racer: Because I skied so often, my muscles became strong and limited. With Pilates, I learned how to regain flexibility in joints and opposing muscles.

  • Female dressage rider: I've developed stronger abdominals, better balance and posture. The flexibility in my hips, legs and low back has improved my overall performance.

"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness."

"Physical fitness can neither be acquired by wishful thinking nor by outright purchase."

"Patience and persistence are vital qualities in the ultimate successful accomplishment of any worthwhile endeavor."

"…above all, learn how to breathe correctly."
