Opening night May 8 for Music Man at San Juan Community Theatre

posted 05/08/2008
OPENING NIGHT PARTY for Meredith Willson’s "The Music Man". That means our own hometown

Rocky Bay Café will be concocting delicious complimentary appetizers and desserts (a few examples: mini-cordon bleu, spanokopita and egg rolls with Asian dipping sauces). There will also be complimentary drinks. It all starts at 7 p.m., with curtain time at 7:30 p.m.

Directed by SJCT’s Merritt Olsen, The Music Man is filled with local talent: from the more than 50 actors and actresses to the talented musical orchestra directed by Dorothy Baker to the dazzling choreography by Linda Downes and Lisa Duke.

During intermission, check out the Membership Matters table to see how you can play a part in the success of San Juan Community Theatre. And we’ll also have a display set up showcasing a local islander who is entitled to the credit for the beginning of the 1962 film version of The Music Man, starring Robert Preston and Shirley Jones.

If you can’t make it Thursday, the musical continues its run on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and then on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Performances continue next Thursday-Sunday, May 15-18, as well.

Tickets for the OPENING NIGHT PARTY are $19 for adults, $10 for student reserved, and $5 student RUSH (on available seats one hour before the performance).

The Box Office is open Tuesdays through Fridays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and one hour before each performance. You can also call 378-3210 during those hours or visit us at www.sanjuancommunitytheatre.org

Auditions for SJCT's Summerfest Play May 20 & 21

posted 05/08/2008
Want to be part of one rootin’-tootin’ romp of a fun farce that takes us back to the good ol’ days of the wild, wild west? (Think gunslingin’, saloon girls and a script that includes words like "lily-livered" and "yellow-bellied.")

Auditions for San Juan Community Theatre's Summerfest 2008 play: The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch by James L. Rosenberg will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, May 20 and 21, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the PARC building (70 Saltspring Road off Beaverton Valley Road). Performances are scheduled for July 26 through August 6.

Sneaky Fitch is one wild character who shares the stage with many more wild and crazy characters with plenty of audience interaction to make for "action-from-the-get-go" family entertainment.

The play is directed by Jane Maxwell Campbell, a newcomer to the island and SJCT. She's directed "The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch" three times during her previous theatrical career in California. "The show has always brought many laughs," said Jane. "There are roles for all ages starting at eight years old and up."

Ages vary depending on role: Women: 25-65 (and up). Men: 30-70 (and up). Children: 8 (and up). Roles available:

  • TWO NARRATORS: Interact with audience and within the show.

  • RACKHAM: The fastest gun in the West.

  • MERVYN VALE: Gopher Gulch’s morbid undertaker.

  • MRS. VALE: She is similar to her husband in demeanor and his pale/drawn look.

  • MAROON: A likable and voluptuous woman who is the “queen of the saloon” girls.

  • SHERIFF JACK OGLESBY: Meek and likable.

  • DOC BURCH: Strong, humorous, confident, cunning and manipulative.

  • REVEREND STANLEY BLACKWOOD: The “over the top” town preacher (and sometimes the town banker).

  • MRS. BLACKWOOD: Similar to Mrs. Vale; a gossip, overbearing and a snob.

  • SNEAKY FITCH: This is a fantastic role for a committed actor who must literally carry the show that is his namesake.

  • JOE CARTER, BILL JACKSON & BOB WILSON: These are repetitive and physically comedic roles.

  • SALOON GIRLS: The Lovely Ladies of the Red Dog Saloon.

  • TOWNSPEOPLE: A variety of country and town folk, including children at least 8 years old.

  • THE MUSICIANS: A small ensemble of musicians that play off the actions of the actors and the show.

Perusal scripts are available at the Box Office with a $10 deposit. The Box Office is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and one hour before each performance.

Local writer/illustrator offers a book about an Island Girl who tackles the wilderness on horseback

Bruce Conway of Ilumina Publishing announced the publication of a new book, entitled "My Champion". The book showcases the rugged San Juan Islands in 22 original oil paintings by Susan Carnes. The story is about a 10-year-old girl and her faithful workhorse on a glorious adventure of self-discovery. In the natural arena of Driftwood Cove, wistful dreaming and child’s play turn into a contest with nature’s fury only a champion could win. The longing to be unbridled and run free is graced with love in this portrait of a wild heart. Master storyteller Ernest Pugh narrates the story on an accompanying CD, enlivening the vivid imagery with his expressive voice.

Educators, environmentalists, counselors, writers, artists, grandparents, parents, horse-lovers and youth speak of "My Champion" with enthusiasm: Maureen Dietrich, editor of Pacific Pearl Magazine, writes "Carnes’ rich, colorful illustrations weave together the story with her own profound passion for our natural environment. Upbeat and inspiring, this book speaks to young girls everywhere with kindness and understanding." R. Ted Johnson, Chicago public school principal, describes the book as "a reflection into the fragile self-esteem of the human psyche." Artist Sherry Smith-Bell remarks that Carnes "captures the poetic wonder of a young girl’s growth towards confidence and maturity."

Author and artist Susan Carnes created the story from pieces of her life. Islanders know her as the former 4-H Coordinator who showcased the work of youth. Before moving to Friday Harbor, Susan was an elementary school counselor in Sweet Home and Holly Oregon, involved in issues that included self-esteem, stewardship and outdoor recreation. She worked as a counselor in mental health and taught art in the schools and communities of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Susan and her husband raised three sons on a large Wisconsin cattle farm overlooking Lake Superior. From the time of her first art show at age nine, she drew, raised and raced horses, often winning prizes and riding champions. When she was just five years old, Susan began to ride a Percheron horse from her father’s farm team.

With his power and protection, she built driftwood kingdoms along the water, and dreamed one day of writing and illustrating a book about what she had learned in the wilderness. Today, with granddaughters as models, the majesty of the Pacific Northwest as inspiration, and the understanding of a lifetime of work with children, "My Champion" is the realization of that dream.

"Barefoot in the Park" runs May 1-18

posted 03/24/2008
San Juan Benefit Players Theatre will kick off their 2008-2009 season with Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park." The action takes place in a small, quirky 5th-floor walk-up Greenwich Village apartment as newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratter contend with a malfunctioning heater, a hole in the roof, and an upstairs neighbor who must go through their flat to reach his apartment.

Paul is a buttoned-down young man focused on becoming a successful lawyer while Corie is outgoing and romantic. Throw in Corie's meddling mother, Edith and a hilarious sequence of misunderstandings that test the boundaries of their love, and you've got the perfect recipe for an evening of laughter.

All performances will take place at the Benefit Players Theatre on the corner of Guard and Taylor in Friday Harbor. As always, admission is by donation. Proceeds from some performances will be used for the general operating expenses of the Benefit Players, while other performances will be used to raise funds for individuals with specific needs.

Westcott Bay Institute Announces Expansion

posted 03/03/2008
The Westcott Bay Institute (WBI), which operates the Westcott Bay Sculpture Park and the Island Museum of Art, announces the expansion of its programs in the San Juan Islands and a transition management plan to accommodate the growth.

The Island Museum of Art opens again this spring with an exciting series of significant exhibitions, each featuring the work of fine artists of the region. The Institute’s noted educational programs are expanding this year to reach more school groups throughout the islands.

The Westcott Bay Sculpture Park continues to welcome new work from artists of the region. For several years the Park has seen steady growth in attendance, with more than 35,000 documented visitors annually. Negotiations for the addition of sculptures by some of the Northwest’s most notable artists have accelerated.

The Westcott Bay Institute’s Co-Founder and Executive Director Kay Kammerzell will be transitioning her role from Executive Director to Curator this spring. The Board has begun the search for a new Executive Director, welcomed several new members and is inviting Institute supporters to become involved in its growth of exhibitions and educational activities. Committees include: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park, the Island Museum of Art, Special Events, Marketing PR & Outreach, and Education. Those interested are encouraged to call the Westcott Bay Institute at 370-5050.

Nina Le Baron was recently elected President of the Board of Westcott Bay Institute. Le Baron holds degrees in Interior Architecture and Historic Preservation and is owner of the local residential design firm Island Architecture. Le Baron says "Kammerzell and her husband Arnie Klaus, Co-Founder and Board member of Westcott Bay Institute, have provided vision, leadership, and huge amounts of hard work to make the Institute nationally recognized within a mere seven years." In addition to her curatorial duties with WBI, Kammerzell will be pursuing an opportunity to create a new sculpture park on the Kona coast of Hawaii.

The Institute also welcomes two new Board members, Suzy Pingree and Peg Gerlock. Pingree is a semi-retired communication professor with a degree in art history and has taught print and web design for twenty-five years. Peg Gerlock, a collector of regional and native artwork, has more than twenty years’ experience in marketing and public relations and is currently Vice President of Marketing for a market research firm.

The WBI Board of Directors wishes to thank all those individuals and organizations who have and continue to contribute their time, inspiration and donations, without which the Westcott Bay Institute would not be able to fulfill its mission, "to protect and preserve the natural environment of the San Juan Islands for the benefit of the public through education about rural island arts, culture and the environment."
