Port approves sublease

posted 01/11/03
San Juan Office Supply will move into the building currently occupied by Aloha Appliance. Port of Friday Harbor Commissioners gave the go-ahead, during their January 8, 2003 meeting, for Steve and Michelle Luther to sublet their building to Jeff VanDyke, owner of the office supply store. According to Port Director Steve Simpson, the Luthers are retiring.

Appliance store says ‘Aloha’ to new home

The new building that was walled and framed in less than a day along the upper part of Spring Street will be the home to Aloha Appliance & Carpet Sales & Service.

Aloha, currently located further up the street, is growing and requires more space, says Steve Luther, who owns and operates the business with his wife Michele. The new 2,800 square-foot building, features about twice the display area as the store has now.

"It let's us customize the building for our needs," says Steve Luther of designing and owning a structure.

The 30-foot by 65-foot showroom allows the Luthers to expand their appliance lines to add Amana and Bosch to their current offerings of Whirlpool and Maytag.

"It gives a good range of brands, styles and prices," Luther says.

The new building, which the Luthers own on land from the Port of Friday Harbor at the north end of the Friday Harbor Airport, will provide "greater visibility and will have ample parking," Luther adds. It will also feature more storage space than their current home.

Due to a shortage of time -- the Luthers' current lease expires in the end of May -- they decided to use Armstrong Construction to build their new store. The Auburn-based company, which also built the Luthers' home, took plans for the new retail space and built the walls and trusses to size. The walls and trusses were trucked to the island and a crane lifted the exterior walls into place in less than four hours March 24, 2000. Trusses were nailed into place later that day.

The rest of the work on the store is continuing and the Luthers hope to open their new location during the last two weeks of May, 2000.
