Pelindaba Lavender Harvest Festival July 16 and 17

posted 03/25/05
Pelindaba Lavender Farm will hold its 2005 Harvest Festival on July 16-17 from 10 am to 5 pm both days. Entrance to the Festival is free. The theme this year, "Science and Lavender," focuses on the 2,500 year history of the therapeutic uses of lavender, emphasizing 21st century research on the newer applications of lavender oil subsequent to the achievement of DNA sequencing. Stephen Robins, M.D., co-owner of Pelindaba, will highlight the series of events which have led to the successful use of lavender in a number of medical conditions. Other talks will focus on the cultivation of lavender and its many uses from personal care to culinary. Craft workshops on wand and wreath making, plus crafts for children, will be held.

There will also be docent tours of Pelindaba's organic fields, the commercial kitchen from which Pelindaba's many delicacies emerge, and the production center where over 100 products are handcrafted from Pelindaba's flowers and oil. Music, picnics in the fields, lunch prepared by Pelindaba chefs, and cameo appearances by renowned Shakespeare company members Stage Left showcasing their summer production of "Othello," will all be featured. The cutting field will be available for bouquet gathering by visitors. The Gatehouse store and nursery will be stocked with handcrafted lavender products and plants. Since 2004, two new offerings at Pelindaba Lavender have attracted attention. The Lavender Fields Day Spa is located at the top of the lavender fields. It has a comprehensive menu of spa treatments from a specialist staff.

Pelindaba Downtown, located in the center of Friday Harbor, is an extension of the farm. It consists of a Product Gallery, a Café where Pelindaba Farms' baked goods, espresso, lemonade, and teas are served in a large, light filled area, and a Gathering Place where special events that range from book signings to musical and theatrical performances take place. There is free WiFi and a lounge area next to a fireplace for small groups to gather.

In February, the Travel Channel aired a show called "Honeymoon Hot Spots" which included the San Juan Islands, and Pelindaba Lavender. This is the latest in a number of national features on Pelindaba.

In 2003, it was the cover story in Better Homes and Gardens. It was named a national treasure by In-Style magazine and its culinary products have been featured on The Today Show. Pelindaba Lavender is also a recipient of the 2004 Governor's Economic Development Award for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

The physical location of the farm and Festival is 33 Hawthorne Lane, Friday Harbor, Washington. Parking is abundant, though a local bus service, San Juan Transit, offers direct transport from the ferry landing and Roche Harbor. Lavender festival draws visitors

Cooking with Lavender was the theme of the Pelindaba Lavender Farm second Annual Harvest Festival July 12 and 13, 2003.

Soma Andrews of San Juan Island sampled the lavender.

Calli and Billie Rothberg of Beacon, New York gathered bouquets.

Sarah, Christian and Tom Carter of San Juan Island created wreaths.

In addition to cooking demonstrations by local chefs, festivities included guided tours, oil distillation demonstrations, massages, and music by Sugar on the Floor.

Visitors harvested bouquets from a cutting field. Artists were inspired by the 10,000 lavender plants blooming in the field. Mulno Cove Farms provided picnic lunches.
