FRIDAY HARBOR REALTY

Natalie King named designated broker

posted 09/21/2007
In March 2004, Greg and Natalie King purchased Friday Harbor Realty which then consisted of four agents working in a 450-sq. ft. space. Greg and Natalie had a dream. They purchased and renovated the historic San Juan Inn building to house twelve real estate professionals. Their independent office has successfully carved a tremendous market share in just three years and leads San Juan Island real estate offices with the highest number of transactions year to date in 2007.

This month Friday Harbor Realty celebrates yet another milestone with Natalie King stepping up as Designated Broker. Born and raised on San Juan Island, Natalie approaches the business of real estate with spirit, style, and integrity. Attacking the industry with drive, determination, and passion, Natalie truly lives and breathes her work. With Natalie at the helm, Friday Harbor Realty offers a bracing new definition of success based on the joy, dedication, attention to detail, and satisfaction only pride of ownership can provide.

Return of the Kings

A member of the King family has worked on Friday Harbor’s Spring Street for five generations. Greg King, and his wife Natalie McMahon-King, are resuming that tradition as the new owners of Friday Harbor Realty.

"Something I’ve always wanted to live up to is the way my grandparents ran a business," Greg said of Blair and Vi King, who owned and operated Kings Market for many years. "It was more than a grocery store. They took care of people."

Greg, the son of Karen and Rick King, also worked as a bagger at Kings, the store established by his great-grandfather Lyle King in 1929. "I’ve always really respected the way my grandparents did business on the island -- the way they supported the community and the way they supported people who need help."

Natalie, daughter of Tom and Linda McMahon, becomes the second generation of her family to work at Friday Harbor Realty -- her mother has worked there for 17 years. "She knows a lot," Natalie said of Linda McMahon.

Greg and Natalie were close to Dorothy Tollenaar, who started, owned and ran Friday Harbor Realty for 30 years until her recent death. Greg grew up next door to Tollenaar and Natalie was as close as a granddaughter.

"Dorothy was so happy when I was going to marry Greg," Natalie said.

The Kings plan to run Friday Harbor Realty much as Tollenaar did. "We want to carry on the tradition that Dorothy started," Natalie said.

"We always want to keep Friday Harbor Realty a non-franchise real estate office," Greg said.

In addition to Linda McMahon’s experience, Natalie and Greg have other veteran real estate mentors in Chita Miller, Diana Clark, Gail Hyland and Sandi Woodruff. "We love the people in the office," Greg said.

The two also are passionate about real estate and island life.

"Greg’s wanted to do this for a long time," Natalie said of her husband, who enrolled in real estate classes "just for the education."

Greg and Natalie had to be resourceful when they bought property and developed a greater appreciation of the real estate industry. "We really want to work with people who need a creative way to buy a home," Greg said.

The two believe buying real estate is the "best investment right now" and the islands are always a prime market.

"We love it here," Greg said.

"I’ve lived all over and I think this is one of the most wonderful places to be," Natalie said.
