Shaw Island property sold

posted 09/30/03
A Shaw Island couple will be the new owners of the 1.8 acre property owned by the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. Real Estate Agent Sam Buck is handling the transaction for the nuns who have decided to leave after 27 years on the island. The property includes the Little Portion store which has a two-bedroom apartment above it, 269 feet of dock space and a two-bedroom cottage.

Buck said, "I am quite certain, we could have gotten more money, but the sisters said these are the best people to serve the community." The name of the couple was not available for release Monday. The sisters had received letters of support for the purchasers from many Shaw residents according to Buck.

The three nuns do not know where they will serve next. They will receive instructions from their community. They are leaving Shaw because it is getting harder to do the work and it is time for a change, according to Sister Catherine.

The sisters have a contract with Washington State Ferries to run the Shaw Island terminal. According to WSF spokesperson Susan Harris, once the ferry system receives word from the sisters, an Request for Proposals (RFP) will be sent out.
