Computer Place introduces new high speed Web serviceposted 01/14/04
The Accelerator works by caching and compressing the data before sending it to a customer's computer over their standard telephone line through a normal dialup modem connection. It therefore does not require any new hardware, works anywhere telephone service is available, and requires only a small amount of software, which can be downloaded in just a few minutes. The incremental cost of this new service, for Interisland.net customers, is $4.00 per month, making the full cost of high-speed Internet service $24.00 monthly, or $264 yearly. Web acceleration works by utilizing caching and compression to optimize delivery of web content after it leaves a web server and before it's delivered to the browser. Caching reduces the time spent waiting between sending data packets, and compression reduces the amount of data transferred over the slowest portion of the data connection (the modem and telephone lines that represent the "last mile" to the customer). An optional feature of the Accelerator software is the ability to block annoying "Pop-Up" ads, which also improves performance by avoiding the download of unwanted content. Interisland.net is the Internet Service Provider arm of The Computer Place of Friday Harbor, Inc., a full-service retail computer business. The Computer Place, founded by George Johnson in 1993, specializes in exceptional customer service to computer users in San Juan County. Interisland.net provides Internet access through Points-of-Presence in Friday Harbor and Eastsound, Washington. |
