Mayor David Jones cut the ribbon Friday, Jan. 6, 2006 at a ceremony for the Bellingham/Friday Harbor passenger ferry service at Spring Street Landing.

Whatcom Council of Governments has a federal grant to run the service Monday through Friday through the end of March. The Port of Friday Harbor waived fees for the operation.

The boat is averaging 15 to 20 riders per run according to officials. During the holiday season, the average was more than 25 riders per run.

If the service proves to be popular, the agency will work on having it run again next fall.
