REMOTE CONTROLS & MAGNIFYING CANDLES

Have you experienced one of those days when bizarre events started happening from the time you got out of bed and continued throughout the day? I had one of those days last week. It began when I rushed to get to a local grocery store for their annual sale. Although I didn't wake up until 7:30, I was determined to be at the store when it opened at 8 a.m. As I entered the building at 8:03, someone in the produce department asked if I had a remote-controlled truck. Puzzled at first, I soon realized I was holding the remote control for my stereo in my hand. In my rush, I turned off the stereo system and took the remote control with me to the grocery.

The rest of the day was filled with more distraction and less-than-brilliant outcomes. Fortunately I was able to laugh at myself along with those around me, but by the end of the day I was frazzled. Filling my tub with a hot, sudsy, bubble bath, I put a relaxing CD on to play. Then I lit four big candles and placed them next to the bathroom mirror, before climbing into the tub.

As I soaked, my stupor lifted just enough to notice that the light from three candles grouped together seemed much brighter than if they had been separated. My logical mind told me that there was just as much light in the room no matter where the candles were, but somehow it seemed brighter when the candles were grouped together.

Suddenly the messages of that bizarre day became clear: don't rush, use the right tool for the job, be able to laugh at yourself when you screw up, and recognize that your light shines brighter in a group than all alone.

  • Do you become distracted and make more mistakes when you rush?

  • Are you able to laugh at your mistakes? If not, why?

  • How do you take care of yourself when you get stressed?

  • What groups help magnify your light?
