WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

The mail will be in our mailboxes on schedule today. I know this because I heard the roar of the postal service airplane flying over my house at 5:40 a.m. As I lay in bed listening to the familiar sound, I also knew that it was not foggy outside because the plane was right on time. I turned over and thought about what else I knew.

I could hear the wind gusting outside, but it obviously wasn't a severe storm or the plane would not have been flying. There was no rain falling because no pinging sounds were coming from the metal roof or the rain gutter. I heard my computer printer restarting itself and running a self-test, which told me that the electricity had been off. However I knew that it wasn't cold outside because the baseboard heaters were not running, even though the power had been off during the night.

Looking toward the closed blinds on the bedroom window, I could see the light from my neighbor's yard lamp shining a bit too brightly. This told me it must be quite cloudy outside, or else the early dawn rays would have muted the light from the yard. So, flipping over once more and curling into a fetal position, I gathered the bed covers around my neck and allowed myself a few more minutes of drowsing before getting up.

When I did arise from my bed, I went immediately to the door to verify what I had known. It was indeed quite warm, even though the wind was gusting. Big, black clouds obscured any trace of morning light, but there was no fog or rain evident. With a smug grin on my face, I closed the door, performed my morning ablutions, and put my oatmeal on the stove to cook.
