CORRECTIONS
We've all experienced teachers making corrections on our tests and homework. Most of us have heard about corrections officers at penal institutions. Many of us have seen vivid examples of stock market corrections. Have you noticed, however, that there are many other kinds of corrections in our world? The bursting of the ".com bubble" was one recent correction. The proliferation of internet business that sprang up in the 90s ended abruptly in a spectacle reminiscent of what mysteriously happens to an overpopulated tank of amoebas. One day there are millions of them. The next day there are only a few left. The current rash of large corporations filing for bankruptcy may be the next big business correction. Another correction can be found in gender ratios. There are 115 males born to every 100 females, which might seem odd without looking beyond birth. Due to a higher male mortality rate, women outnumber men by age 36. By age 100, women outnumber men eight to one. It will be interesting to see whether these numbers change in coming years. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the Earth frequently makes corrections in the form of earthquakes. In the last two weeks we've had about two dozen quakes recorded in our region. Four occurred at the end of last week, and three of those were were strong enough to be felt over a large area. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) may be another type of correction taking place. It is a new twist on an old virus. We've seen similar changes in diseases from HIV to antibiotic-resistant viruses. Whenever something gets out of balance, sooner or later a correction comes along. We can choose to accept this concept by preserving balance when possible and adapting to corrections when balance is lost. Attempting to maintain imbalance, like the proverbial little Dutch boy who put his finger in the hole in the dike, only works in fairy tales.
