WHAT AM I MISSING?
A few days ago, I watched a husband and wife get out of their car and walk down the street together. From the license plate on the sedan, I could see that they were visiting our town from another state. What was really amazing, though, was that the two of them were talking to two other people on their separate cell phones as they walked. Now there could be all kinds of reasons for making simultaneous phone calls as they walked down the streets of our fair town in the middle of the summer tourist season. However, I had to wonder what was so important that it could not have waited for them to get back to their hotel. Were they undercover F.B. I. agents investigating possible terrorists in our cozy community? Could they be special advisors to the President who were giving him counsel on foreign relations after seeing how U.S. and Canadian citizens co-exist on a small island in the Pacific Northwest during a national holiday? What was so urgent that two phone calls needed to be made at the same time while walking down the street of a town where they were visitors? Perhaps they were calling their best friends to share the enjoyment of their vacation. I wonder, though, what they were missing as they walked down the street talking into their cell phones. Did they see the window displays in the shops they passed? Were they able to exchange smiles and eye contact with other people on the sidewalk? Did they see the funny little dog looking out of the window of the car that drove by? Could they not wait until they got home to tell their friends what they had seen and done? Although I don't own a cell phone, I wonder how much of life I miss because I am too distracted or preoccupied to notice.
