LOOKING UP
Have you ever been in a place so long or so many times that you knew every inch of it without having to look? There is something very reassuring about knowing where things are and how to navigate your way around the nooks and crannies and obstacles without having to think about it. That's how I felt about my grocery store until recently. I've been shopping there since it opened four years ago, and had shopped at its predecessor for nine years before that. I greet the clerks and managers by first name, and always know where to find whatever I need. I even help others find items they can't locate. The high shelving units in this store are often topped off with extra stock in boxes. So I'm accustomed to seeing boxes up above shelves, and pay little attention to them. Imagine my surprise, however, when I turned onto the frozen food aisle and saw a woman struggling to reach a lovely basket on top of the freezers. After helping retrieve the basket she'd chosen, I stood slack-jawed wondering when this large basket collection had been put on top of the freezers. Curious about what other high altitude changes had taken place, I walked across the back of the store peering down each aisle. I discovered ice chests above the housewares section, rubber boots above the cleaning supplies, and piņatas over the Hispanic foods. I was shocked. When had all these changes taken place? How could I not have noticed them? How often had I gone to other stores looking for these very products? In my certainty about where things should be, I had missed all the new items that weren't where I expected them to be. Yet others had seen them and were buying them. I wonder how many changes in other places I've missed as well?
