Fear & Passion

Awakened from a sound sleep by a cacophony of noises, I jumped from my bed and dashed through the door, bumping into my weekend guest who was emerging from the spare bedroom. Recovering our balance, the two of us continued to the front door, unlocked it, and stared in amazement at the scene outside.

People were scurrying about in a foot of snow -- some barking orders, some wailing in pain, and others watching in disbelief. Ambulances screamed down streets. Soldiers with guns were running about. The distinctive flag of the International Red Cross was planted in the middle of the courtyard.

Gripped in fear, my guest and I observed the chaos. We wanted to ask someone what was happening, but were too confused to do it. Instead we stood, frozen in the doorway, staring at the spectacle.

Suddenly hearing the sound of a flute and a harp, I turned in the direction of the music. I saw a dark-haired woman strolling toward us in her nightgown while playing a flute. Behind her, a young man in a long nightshirt played a harp tucked under his arm.

I rubbed my eyes in disbelief. Immediately the entire scene disappeared, but the music continued. Shaking my head to regain my senses, I realized I wasn't in the doorway. I was in bed hearing French Baroque music on the radio. There was no chaos or snow outside. I had no guest visiting for the weekend. It had all been a fearful dream.

Massaging my stiff neck, I willed my heartbeat to slow down. Soon the flute and harp music was replaced by Elgar's cello concerto. Listening to the soulful performance, I realized how fearful thoughts can paralyze and imprison me if I buy into them; but passion, which Yo-Yo Ma so deftly expresses, overcomes fear.

In these days when fear confronts us from every direction, I am going to rediscover and focus on my passion. Care to join me?

  • How does fear affect you?
  • Do you listen to fear mongers?
  • What are you passions?
  • Will you focus on fear or passion today?
