INDISPOSED, NOT INDISPENSABLE

After dinner on Tuesday night, I had those funny feelings that usually foretell a winter cold. You know the symptoms: scratchy throat, burning eyes, slightly stuffy nose, unexplained tiredness, and difficulty concentrating. When I woke up on Wednesday, I knew I must get important errands done quickly as a full-blown illness was imminent.

I dressed and finished wrapping Christmas presents for family members. With less than two weeks until Christmas, they had to be mailed. After attaching the last gift tag, I bagged the collection of gifts and took them to the mailing store.

By the time the clerk calculated the cost of packing and mailing the goods, I was starting to sneeze. By the time I'd run to the grocery for essentials and gotten back home, I had just enough energy to climb the six porch steps and unlock the door. Somehow I managed to get the food in the refrigerator and remove my shoes before collapsing on the bed.

The next three days are a bit of a blur in my memory, but I do remember a phone call or two and the delivery of various containers of soup. There would be a knock at the door. I'd crawl out of bed and shuffle to the porch, where I'd find the gift of food and see a vehicle pulling out of the driveway. Fortunately the delivery person had the good sense to stay away from me and my germs.

By the weekend, despite sore ribs from coughing, I was able to drive to the post office, collect my bank statement, and return home. After a short nap, I even reconciled my checking account! With luck I'll be back to normal by Monday, and all that other important stuff I thought had to be done last week will get done.

  • Do you ever put your need to be in control ahead of caring for yourself?

  • How do you respond when you feel ill?

  • Has the world ever come to an end because you were sick?

  • What will you do to take care of yourself today?
