ANGELS EVERYWHERE

Now that we are in the twelve days of Christmas, I often think of the song lyrics which include everything from a partridge in a pear tree to twelve drummers drumming. On Christmas Eve, however, I became keenly aware of something not listed in these lyrics. It was angels, and they were appearing all around me.

No, I wasn't enjoying too many cups of holiday cheer, or stressing myself to the point of hallucinating. On the contrary, I still had my wits about me. I just began to notice all the the things that were happening around me and the people who were making them happen. These were the angels. They were, as my dictionary describes the term, the kind and lovable people manifesting goodness, purity, and selflessness.

Some of these angels brought food to my doorstep when I was too sick to cook or even purchase food. Others dropped by my office after I had recovered to see if they could help me catch up on my work. There were some who came when I was not looking and left gifts, cards, and encouraging notes. A few others appeared when they didn't know I was watching, like the young tykes in the local Christmas Eve pageant.

I don't know if there are more angels around the Christmas season, or if I just notice them more then. Perhaps there's something about this time of year that brings out the angel in even the most hardhearted among us. Or maybe the Christmas spirit allows me to see angels more easily than I do at other times. It might even be possible that I'm experiencing a personal epiphany at the beginning of Christmas rather than on the twelfth night.

Whatever is happening, I'm going to watch all these angels around me. Then I'm going to see if I can follow their example and work on earning my own wings.

  • Have you noticed any angels this Christmas?

  • How have they manifested goodness, purity, and selflessness?

  • Are you willing to follow their example?

  • What angelic action will you take today?
