SHADES OF GREEN

It was one of those rare days when my calendar did not list two or more important events or appointments. Yet it was too wet outdoors to work in the garden or mow grass. Having risen from bed only two hours earlier, it was not yet time for a nap. So I decided to take a drive around the island and discover what was happening on the northern and western shores.

It had been several months since my last tour of these roads, and I was astonished at the changes I encountered. Homes, ponds, landscaped estates, and even an entire village seemed to have sprung up over night. The county park had several newly added campsites as well as upgraded amenities. Roads that I remember as being gravel and dirt were now paved. The countryside was giving way to development, and I was not at all sure that I approved.

Then I made a sharp, hairpin turn and beheld the sun lighting up the southern face of Mount Dallas. Everywhere I looked there were various shades of green sparkling on the hillside. Some were dark. Others were light. There must have been a dozen or more variations on the color green.

Suddenly, an unexpected thought hit my brain. If I were trying to explain to someone from another planet what "green" is, which of those colors would I tell them was "green?" And, if I told them that they were all "green," which one would be the best example?

Hmmmm! Maybe I'll have to take another drive around the island to see if some of that development that shocked me so much was really all that bad, or if parts of it were just various shades of green.

  • Is your world black and white, or does it allow a variety of shades and colors?

  • Can you accept various shades, even when they aren't your favorite one?

  • Do you distinguish between shades of green and other colors that aren't in the green palette?

  • How can you make your world sparkle more like the side of Mount Dallas?
