WHAT ELSE DOES ONE DO?
My friend, the physician, is married to a nurse. They've had separate careers in hospitals, and have seen millions of medical cases. However neither of them was prepared for a recent case involving their son. The email I received said, "My son was in a car crash last night. He will have surgery on his hip, knee, and ankle and may need a total hip replacement later." I simply replied that I would keep his son in my prayers. I then sent emails to several other friends around the world, requesting that they put this young man and his family on their prayer lists and ask others to do the same. What else does one do in such situations? As the days passed, I learned that my friend's son had worked late and gone to a restaurant with others. At midnight, after dinner with wine and live music, he drove away. Speeding up to enter the main highway, he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree. A fire engine arrived quickly to remove him from the wreckage, and an ambulance took him to his father's hospital. My friend was called in at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday and saw his son "with limbs at impossible angles, but totally conscious and coherent with IVs and blood being infused." Two sets of CT scans had originally shown horribly displaced fractures, and several orthopedic surgeons agreed that a hip replacement was required. By Wednesday, however, x-rays of the pelvis and femur showed no fractures and no further displacement since an earlier reduction. When questioned, the orthopedic staff couldn't explain these changes. Two days later, my friend's son went home from the hospital using a walker and bearing weight on his injured hip. No one can logically or scientifically explain what happened to my friend's son, but deep in my heart I know.
