WHICH OFFERS WOULD YOU REFUSE?
I've just received the November issue of a magazine to which I subscribe. Whenever I remove a new magazine from its mail wrapper, I also remove all the advertising cards that are inserted or bound into the magazine, and throw them away. A friend taught me to do that so that the cards don't get in my way when I read the articles. This time, as I was removing the cards from the magazine, I made a very interesting discovery. Along with all advertisements for various companies and products were two cards encouraging me to renew my subscription. The first guaranteed me a savings of 58% off the cover price for a full year of the magazine for only $39.97. The second allowed me to give a one-year subscription to a friend for $30 if I renewed my own subscription for $30 at the same time. So I set these two cards aside to consider later and opened the rest of my mail. In a separate envelope, I found another subscription offer from the same magazine. By renewing my current subscription for one year at $40, a friend could receive a one-year gift subscription for free. Despite my difficulty working Sudoku puzzles, I'm pretty good with math; and this wasn't exactly rocket science. Perhaps the company only sent this third offer to loyal subscribers while the first two were in the magazine for anyone who reads it to see. However I'm sure that they are not losing money with two subscriptions for $40 even though $39.97 is a 58% saving off the newsstand price for a single subscription. Hmmm. I wonder if I should look for my check book and postage stamps now or wait for yet a another holiday subscription offer.
