Uninhibited Singers
I'm sure I must be the only human being in the civilized world who has never watched an episode of "American Idol." Even my friend in New Zealand tunes in weekly. Furthermore, there seems to be some debate about whether it's better to win or just be voted off the show. After all, Jennifer Hudson went from being voted off "American Idol" to winning an Oscar for her role in the movie "Dreamgirls." Last week a new American Idol was selected. So I found it ironic that I discovered a child no more than 3-4 years old singing her heart out in the middle of aisle two at the grocery store on Thursday. Her mom and dad were comparing prices not far away, but this little lady was oblivious to the world as she strolled down the aisle singing. Fascinated, I wanted to hear what the child was singing. She was belting out whatever the lyrics were, but background noise kept me from understanding her words. Finally, I passed her so that she was singing toward me, and I could hear every word clearly. With perfect rhythm and pitch, and absolutely no inhibitions, she sang: I need to go potty. I need to go potty now. Needless to say, I thought I was going to bust a gut trying to hold in my laughter while deciding whether or not to point out the obvious to her parents. It was one of the most delicious moments of my entire life, and I quickly found myself needing to go potty, too. Fortunately Mom's hypervigilant and ultrasonic hearing quickly zeroed in on the child's informative lyrics, and they zoomed toward the restrooms hand in hand. I wonder what the world would be like if we all became uninhibited singers making up lovely little songs about our problems and needs rather than shouting at one another with angry demands and put-downs. Would anybody listen?
