PROMISE!
Did you feel it this morning? When you were lying still in your bed trying to decide whether you were actually awake, did you feel it? It wasn't the tremor of an earthquake or the rolling of ocean waves. Yet I felt it instantly. I wasn't sure what it was at first, but I could feel it even before the light of dawn shown through my bedroom window. It permeated the walls of my home and made the hair on my arms and neck stand up. I first noticed it last week as decorations were being put up for the Winter Wonderland celebration in Friday Harbor, but didn't pay much attention. Then the Disney movie "Enchanted" sensitized my senses to "happy ever after" energy. Suddenly I could see, hear, feel, taste, and smell it everywhere. There were wreaths and Christmas trees being sold and auctioned. There were bake sales and nearly new sales. There were children giggling and singing more while arguing less. There were parents hustling bags and boxes in and out of car trunks and avoiding questions. There were more smiles approaching me than usual, and the energy around me seemed to buzz. I found myself wanting to sing and dance like that cast of thousands in the movie. As manic as my world became, I was enlivened by it. Yet what I experienced was far from being superficial or pretend. That's what I could feel this morning. That's the part that enfolds me and reaches out to others and somehow makes everything okay. That's the part that includes joy and awe and grief and remorse and all the other emotions that any of us could ever feel -- the part that heightens our awareness of ourselves and others. If you missed it this morning, watch for it today and see if you feel it. It's there if you look. I promise.
