MAKING PLANS

With flannel sheets still on my bed, my toes are toasty even though my uncovered nose is frigid. Not expecting such an unusually chilly spring night, I failed to turn my thermostat up before going to bed. Now as a bit of daylight filters in through the window shades, I am forced to plan a mad dash from this warm cocoon to the bathroom and back. The shock of the cold air will not be pleasant, but the alternative would be worse.

My slippers are in the back of the closet and will take too much time to locate. I can grab my heavy cotton bathrobe on the fly, putting my arms in and securing the tie as I run. My feet will be on carpet until I get to the bathroom linoleum. However it should only take three big steps to get to the furry blue bath mat on the floor by the tub. It won’t be fun, but it is definitely doable.

Throwing back the covers with my left hand, I grab the bathrobe from the foot of the bed on the rebound. My right hand grabs the glasses from the bedside as my feet hit the floor. The cold metal frames startle me as the glasses go on, but I’m on my way. The sleeves of the robe are in place by the time I leave the bedroom. The tie gets secured in the hallway. The bathroom floor is as cold as expected, but the three running steps aren’t too bad; and the furry mat is welcome.

Then, goal accomplished, the whole trip is repeated in reverse. Three cold steps, untying the robe in the hallway, dropping the robe on the floor, jumping into bed and grabbing the covers -- I begin to warm up again. Now I can figure out a new plan for turning up the thermostat that I forgot to adjust on the trip to the bathroom.

  • When faced with adversity, do you make plans?

  • Do you use specific strategies?

  • How do you react if your plan is not complete?

  • What do you need to plan for today?
