SOMETHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY

Despite my attempts to maintain proper decorum, the old bag looked really funny hanging upside down from the tree branch. Who would ever expect to see such a silly sight in the middle of the well manicured landscaping next to the well maintained parking lot of a well respected bank. It made me laugh out loud. I wondered why there wasn’t a crowd of onlookers. Perhaps no one else had seen what I saw, or perhaps they had successfully pretended not to notice and moved on.

There are certainly no laws against anyone or anything hanging upside down from a tree branch, unless the tree is posted against trespass. Still, the sight was so out of place compared to what one might expect that I was both startled and amused. I couldn’t figure out how the old bag got up there in the first place let alone whether I should offer assistance getting back to the ground or just walk by as if it were nothing out of the ordinary.

Since no one else was there at the moment to see the spectacle, and since no harm seemed to be being perpetrated, I decided to walk on despite the strangeness of the whole affair. Why should I stick my nose into something that was none of my business? Besides, I had errands to complete.

On my way home, however, I decided to pass back by the tree at the bank. As I turned into the parking lot, I could see that the tree limb was empty and a pile of white was crumpled on the ground below. Sure enough, the old bag had fallen from the branch and lay in a heap on the ground.

When I got to the scene, I could see clearly that it was a bag from the market across the street. How it got onto the tree limb and back down again will forever remain a mystery.

  • How do you react to something out of the ordinary?

  • Are you amused, disturbed, or uninterested?

  • Do you fix it, or leave it alone?

  • What would happen if you looked at it in a different way?
