SLIGHTLY OUT OF FOCUS
I was excited to get my new pair of glasses; but when I put them on, my vision was slightly out of focus. Were the new frames as snug around my ears as the old ones? Perhaps the nose pads weren’t keeping the frames high enough on my nose. Maybe the optical lab hadn't ground the lenses correctly. The optician made some minor adjustments. Then she announced that everything looked like it was where it was supposed to be, and suggested that I just try to get used to my new prescription for awhile. So that's what I did. For a couple of hours I tilted my head one way and then another. I pressed on the ear pieces behind my ears. I lifted the bridge of my frames higher up on my nose. I took my glasses off and put them back on again and again. Still, my vision remained slightly out of focus when I wore the new glasses. Finally I went back to the optical shop and told the optician that something just wasn't right. She took another look. Then, with one quick tug of her pliers on the frames, she fixed the problem, Suddenly everything came into focus. On the ferry ride home, I thought about how many areas of our lives can get slightly out of focus because one little adjustment needs to be made. Automobile spark plugs, checking account balances, political problems, tax issues, constitutional rights, medical prescriptions, exercise and diet routines, homework assignments -- anything can be slightly out of focus when something needs to be adjusted, even a tiny bit.
