Age makes no difference when it comes to excitement or worry. Young or old, we all have situations about which we get excited and situations about which we worry. Sometimes age has an effect on how much we worry or get excited, but the symptoms are the same; and age doesn’t always determine rationality. Excitement and worry just seem to co-exist.
My young friends are excited that snow is forecast for the weekend. My older friends are worried about food supplies and road conditions. My young friends are hoping the snow will extend their mid-winter break at school. My older friends are trying to make quick trips to the mainland before snow falls. My younger friends worry that a trip to the mainland will cause them to miss playing in the snow. My older friends are worried that ferry breakdowns or cancellations will cause them to get caught in the snow.
None of us know whether it is actually going to snow this weekend or not. The weather prognosticators seem to think there is a good chance; and, despite the bulbs shooting up from the ground, it is still February and definitely winter. So it might be useful to make sure the water hoses have been unscrewed from the outdoor faucets and the pipes are protected. It might also be a good idea to make sure the pantry isn’t bare.
However we don’t have to prepare for the kind of winter storms the east coast has been getting the past month or two.
It can be fun to enjoy the excitement of anticipation, and it is wise to be prepared. However, to go crazy with expectation or to get upset or angry over the possibility of any event is just a waste of time and energy.
Young or old, my friends are all reminiscing with stories of sledding down the hill on Nichols Street and drinking hot chocolate afterwards while soup pots simmered on wood stoves. If it snows this weekend we’ll all deal with it in a variety of ways. In the meantime, let’s just relax and enjoy life.
