HOROSCOPEOctober 6 - 12 , 2003 A Variation On a ThemeBy Triana Èlan I just read David Bentley’s latest column, "Make It Go Away." Since my colleague and good friend often run parallel in our thoughts and perceptions, I thought I’d throw in my two cents worth in the Escapism category (since I was going to anyway). Here are a few things this middle-aged mare has discovered: The pop saying "The only way out of it is through it" doesn’t quite fit the ticket. There is no way out of pain, ever. It won’t go away. It gets our attention and we give it more attention than it may deserve. Let’s put this into context: David’s comments about hearing what people said after a film hits the nail on the head...when our larger world spins out of control (which it has) and when we somehow grock that it’s going to get worse (which it will) and when we really ge that there’s not a whole lot we can do about it right now (which there isn’t), our opinions and beliefs become more sacred to us than anything else. Sometimes pain can only be managed, at any level: Physically, emotionally. Our emotions are triggered by our beliefs and values, which are created in a rather simple and systematic way. The results and consequences of our behaviors around those belief systems are complex. When things are happening on a larger scale that we can’t bear to think about and the trickle-down effect slams us up against the wall, our first instinct is to escape it. Fair enough. Nobody embraces pain or invites it unless they’ve gone off their rails. No animal likes pain, no matter how primitive the animal. So of course our first reaction to pain is to get out of it. The physical stuff is sometimes easier to deal with because we usually know the cause and can seek some kind of relief. It’s the emotional stuff that gets tricky, and how we cope with it is as individual as we are. Emotional pain is going to happen. It’s part of life. But emotional pain changes us forever, little by little. If it changes us forever in one fell swoop that usually means trauma. But the ebb and flow of emotion is always with us, and since we give so much attention to what is hard and irksome and inconvenient, we often prolong it by trying to escape it. The feeble attempt to "confront it" also has its drawbacks. Why not just admit it, accept it and get on with it? These are difficult times, to be sure. But when we look at our lives as a whole, pain is part of it. Emotional pain can be managed. It may never go away. But if we look at it and know that it has become a part of us and has somehow changed us, we can look at how we’ve changed rather than struggle to escape. Adapt and survive. And here’s the kicker...what if we’re thriving and don’t even know it?!
