Those Houses

By Triana Èlan

November 24 - 30 , 2003

We are so complex and unique, and the astrology chart reflects this by showing so many variations on a theme. For those of you who are curious about how all this stuff works, I thought I’d end this year by offering some basic lessons in order to help you understand the beauty and mathematical purity of astrology.

First I am going to introduce the twelve Houses which are the building blocks of the horoscope. Whenever I talk about a "sector," I am talking about a "house." The houses are areas of our lives, each house having multiple layers of activity. When a planet occupies a house, that house is considered more active. When a planet transits (moves through) a house, then that specific area of life is emphasized for a time.

The First House is ruled by Aries. The cusp (beginning) of the first house is always the Rising Sign (ascendant). Therefore, if you have, say, a Gemini Rising, it means that the cusp of your first house is in Gemini.

The First House is the area governing the Self...self esteem, self image, how we relate to ourselves and how others first interpret us. Let’s say you are a Virgo with an Aries Rising. You will appear to the world to be more like an Aries as first glance. It will be as others get to know you that your Virgo qualities emerge. This is an overly simple way of explaining how much the Rising Sign influences our lives, but you will get the idea.

A horoscope cannot be cast without three critical pieces of information: The birth date, town of birth and the time of birth. The time is critical because without it, the first house cusp (Rising sign) cannot be accurately pinpointed, thus throwing the entire birth chart askew. Of course, a partial reading can be done without a time of birth, but it would be impossible to interpret which areas of life are affected by planetary trends.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
A fine way to wrap up a month, with so much fire in the zodiac! This puts you at an advantage, Aries, and how we are swinging into the season of reckless spending. Ha! If you have a wish for a Christmas present, now is the time to make it (very) known. You hate it when people forget about you! Looks like you might be upgrading a few things in your life and this is good. Just be sure there’s substance beneath the glitz.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Okay Bull, put aside the bah humbug and get with the program! Your talent makes everything sparkle, so put it to good use. Even if it’s only for a moment...being the trigger for someone to smile creates a long memory. You can’t stand people who make promises then bail, and this may be occurring now...diminish your expectations and don’t keep going there...it’ll only drive you crazy. You know who your real friends are.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
You have the chance to get away with major goofiness, so do it! Folks always appreciate a good laugh and sometimes you’re a true showman that way. Your quick wit is unparalleled and as long as you stay away from sarcasm you’ll do just fine. You may be tempted into self-depreciation as winter sets in and you have time to reflect on your choices. That’s useless too, Twin! Make each day special for youself and others.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
Feelings, oh those feelings! Sometimes you ooze feelings, then you analyze them to death! Ha! Well, we all have to have something to keep us occupied. With your sensitivity you may have developed a way of interpreting others in a way that is defensive on your part. That’s good if you’re engaged in politics or business, but not up close and personal. Focus on listening now and spend some time with people much older than yourself; you’ll appreciate perspectives of wisdom.

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
Leo, now is a very fun time as we close out the month. Go ahead and enjoy it. You’re likely to discover something new during this period, something that will be pleasing to you. If you’re looking for a pet, this is a good week to do it. You’ll find a loyal and intelligent companion. This entire time is about companionship, and you do like to share your den with the right people! Treat yourself, Leo...you deserve it.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
Well now, it looks like family/marriage/partnership issues are flying at you and something’s got your goat. Listen Virgo, you’re very good at setting yourself up to be a martyr so quit it. If you need to draw a boundary and call a halt to something, just do it and don’t worry. You’ll need to stick to it, though. Consistency is required when teaching others how to treat you. No need to split hairs, though. Gently as she goes...

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
Good friends, good music, good food. That’s the ticket for you! Fully imbibe of the holiday season and feel good! There may be an upcoming snag in relation to a family member’s health, so heads up. Just remember that when something is happening to someone else, it is not happening to you. You are a witness, so make it your goal to be a good one. You may not be able to fix it, but you can make the journey one of quality.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
New people, a few bucks in your pocket, and parties have you busy. Just don’t spend it all in one place! You may be frustrated in the gift buying department...that one person seems determined to be difficult to get something for. Well, if you can, get creative and offer a service or some time...a meal out with you, some time helping in the garden come Spring, whatever. Expand your focus to embrace other perspectives and ideas.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
What? Someone is snubbing you?! Well! Never mind, you have plenty to do. Now listen, Archer, don’t procrastinate. Time is moving fast and you have lots to do...you tend to hatch things in your head in their totality and have a problem knowing which step is the first one...be patient and you’ll figure it out. These days it’s all or nothing with you, and there is a lot of focus on you with several planets being in your sign. Don’t overextend yourself! Erm, okay, stability. That’s better.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Give up on being organized, Cappie...it will never be perfect. If you’re already given up, disregard the first sentence. You love to be able to disregard things. Firm up your holiday plans and break a couple of rules just for sport. Put on some happy music (unless you prefer being depressed) and work on a corner of life that’s been bugging you. Sometimes you’re great at getting started, but then you get distracted. See one little thing to its finish and taste the sweetness of success.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Much more wierdness out of you and we’re all going to think it’s Halloween again! Ha! Ever the one to dodge a label or a conclusion, your antics are entertaining, at the very least. If you’re the Worry About the World type, indulge yourself in a good worry, then quit. We are living during "interesting times." Very soon your Ruler, Uranus, will leave your sign and settle into spiritual Pisces, revealing some things you’ve been looking for.

Pisces (February 20-March 20) You are one who never can truly grow up and it’s great. You always strive for the best in humanity and your biggest fault is how you react when your expectations aren’t met. It’s difficult to see potential unexpressed, but hey...everything has its own time and method, including yourself! Now that we’ve taken care of that, it’s time for you to put on your Happy Hat and bring some smiles to others as we head into year’s end.
