The Third House

By Triana Èlan

December 8 - 14 , 2003

The third House in the birth chart is ruled by Mercury and governs the way we think and communicate. It also reveals how we have learned about ourselves and our world from birth. Relationships with siblings fall into this House, as well as our childhood education.

Since we first learn from our family and our relations with siblings is paramount, the third House and the planets within it sheds light on how we have formed patterns of thinking, how we defend ourselves mentally and emotionally, and how we form opinions and conclusions.

We also find early education here, in the context of how we react to others based on our life at home.

Since this House is based on relatives, it also governs short distance travel (assuming that relatives don’t move very far away, which is not always the case).

As we grow and mature, this House takes on a different meaning, and becomes more pragmatic, less subjective. It reveals how we look for facts and empirical evidence. Therefore the third House also relates to the sciences and other fact/observation based subjects.

This is a subjective House and ultimately reveals the power of analysis and synthesis in the individual’s mind.

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself dragging your heels this week; you may well have too many things on your plate and a very full schedule. Don’t add any more things to your list! That would be self defeating and you won’t have the reserves needed if something goes awry. This is a time to be flexible and spontaneous. Find time to be alone and engage in a peaceful activity.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Well now, Little Bull, aren’t we just satisfied?! Planetary influences support you now, and there are plenty of planets in fellow Earth signs to give you the feeling of solidity you crave. Revel in it and share the good cheer. Have a wee party...there’s no host like a Taurus host! Even grumpy Saturn likes you, you lucky thing! Geez, if we could all be that lucky...ho ho ho!

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
The Full Moon in your sign signals a surge of energy for you, so take advantage of it! Although some aspects of your life have been reined in, you still have plenty of latitude in other parts. Now quit overworking everything in your head and take a good look at what is really there. If you have to wait in line somewhere (which you hate), carry a book so you can keep your mind occupied. Someone close to you needs some positive support; give what you can and go the distance.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
No pressure to perform, Moonchild! They get what they get now...you’re busy! It’s likely someone around you is ill, so do the nurturing thing but be sure to care for yourself too. Yes we know some of you Cancer natives prefer to be taken care of, but if there’s nothing wrong with you, get busy! Being of a dualistic nature you sometimes have a hard time making up your mind. Don’t think too hard, just do. And do good!

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
Looks like you’re engaged in lots of busy work. That’s fine, but you gotta have fun, too! As we get older, we get set in our ways and in this fast and increasingly unpredictable world of ours, you have to reach deeper to find your strength. Finding your way in new terrain is not your idea of an adventure, but eventually you hit your stride. Get back to what is simple and true and stick to it!

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
With the ever frantic buildup to the holidays, you have your plate full. This is good, it keeps you out of trouble. But not with yourself. Ha! Caught you in the act! Since you are a sign that works twice as hard to get half as far, know that most of the work you do is inside your own head. If you drop the fault finding with yourself, you’ll get more done. Now listen, make a list of what is exemplary about yourself. Leave out any criticisms, just look at what you’re made of. That’s you. Now smile.

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
My goodness you can get gnarly! This isn’t the time to be gnarly, Libra! Could be that part of your attitude is the pressure you put on yourself to please others, and if that’s the case quit setting yourself up. You govern the area of what is sparkly and pretty, so please yourself with those things and others’ enjoyment is a byproduct. Remember, image is only fleeting; presentation is substance. Do what you love and be happy!

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
Life can be random and chaotic, and you crave solutions to mysteries. An interesting paradox! Just don’t get yourself into trouble over it. In your immature stage, you likely solve mysteries then drop them...having only come to a conclusion, halting the creative process. Patterns are fascinating, so if you look at those, you’ll discover a whole new universe. While you’re doing that, shop! And shop locally.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
Doggone it, those planets in Capricorn are making you spend less than you want to. If you had it your way, every animal and friendly person in the world would have a huge Christmas celebration with lots of everything they love. This year you have to cut back way more than you like to, but this isn’t your fault. It’s just the times. If you can’t spend money, spend time. Spend time helping others decorate, cook, or wrap. Come to think of it, don’t wrap...you get your fingers stuck in the tape and rip things.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Now don’t be doing the bah humbug thing, Cappie...Christmas is your time, and you are lucky enough to have a world festooned with lights and candles during your special time of the year. Put up some winter lights and look at how you are illumined from within. Don’t hide under a bushel basket! You have a wicked streak in you that’s fun and quirky; pull it out and polish it off!

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Oops! It’s not going as planned...well, what does, really? Your sign is the one that crackles with electricity, a flash here, a moment of light there...but only a moment. The cool thing is, that flash is just enough to see with clarity! The current of your being is constant and running in two directions at once so you have your bases covered. Don’t worry, be happy!

Pisces (February 20-March 20) The Full Moon in Gemini (your nemesis) gets your head all confused for a bit, but that’s temporary. Don’t overwork it and don’t reach too far for answers to things that have no answers. This would be a good time to get outta Dodge if you are able, to imbibe yourself of something different and give yourself a fresh perspective. Give yourself the best gift of all...you!
