The Fourth House
By Triana Èlan
December 15-21, 2003
This sector of the birth chart covers the home and parents. It is ruled by the Sign of Cancer and therefore the Moon. Here we find early development of emotions, reactions to one’s family circumstances, and planets in this house as related to other planets reveal family dynamics early in life.
As we grow and mature, the fourth House represents our home as we have created it. Patterns from early childhood will be found in adulthood; for example, if one was raised in conflict and withdrew to their room, the adult will likely use the home as a sanctuary above anywhere else. If an individual grew up in a large family that was happy and stable, the fourth house can reveal a home created to be user-friendly.
Since the fourth House is ruled by the Moon, the formulation of emotions is found here. The core of our emotional being lives here and this is where reactions live side by side. An afflicted fourth House will find an individual who has difficulty distancing from events around them. A harmonious fourth House doesn’t necessarily mean "it’s all good," but it can indicate an individual who has managed to exercise wisdom over emotion.

Aries (March 21 - April 20): This week Mercury goes retrograde in cranky Capricorn; try to keep the blame game down to a minimum. You are likely to find your patience wearing thin under increasing pressure as we barrel toward Christmas, but realize that focusing on what you can’t do will not earn you any eggnog! Be happy with what you have and can do. Put pride in those things. You’ll shine!

Taurus (April 21 - May 20): Mercury goes retrograde this week in your fellow Earth sign Capricorn...you’ll be frustrated by thinking you have to begin things (or finding that what you should have started in September still isn’t started). Don’t go there! No reason to beat your head against a wall, life’s too short. Keep your expectations of yourself to a minimum so you’ll have the energy to be fully present in the moment.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20): So now we’re barreling down to the finish line, you have stuff all over the place, and God forbid someone should help you tidy up...you’ll never find anything again! Pick a corner, any corner, play some happy music and sing through it. This is the only time of year where there are seasonal songs aplenty so join in! Your Ruler Mercury goes retrograde this week in bossy Capricorn so be flexible.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22): Mercury going retrograde in your opposite sign of Capricorn might have you snarling at your significant other as we head on toward the Holiday. You, however, know how to get your own way, and you do it anyway. If you know what you want for Christmas, be sure you’re specific...others can’t read your mind and your attempted subtleties won’t work now so spell it out, literally! That will take pressure off people, including yourself!

Leo (July 23 - August 22): If you’re the showy type, you’re already engaged in parties and gatherings and other such get-togethers. If you’re the reserved type, you’re locked in your den. With you there are no gray areas! Mercury goes retrograde this week in Earthy Capricorn; this shouldn’t affect you too much unless the issue of health is active...watch your bones! Don’t trip and wind up immobile, that makes you really crabby!

Virgo (August 23 - September 22): Okay Virgo, you get to put things aside and take a break. Mercury goes retrograde in Capricorn and actually you’ll see some pressure backing off of you. Less demands, more quiet. Ahhhhhhhh. Just the way you like it. Now don’t go out there and stir the pot just because you’re bored! Do some reminiscing and recall your happiest times; dig that place up inside of you and bring into Now.

Libra (September 23 - October 22): Okay so in midflight, Mercury goes retrograde in Capricorn, which is another bossy sign. If you have an office party, someone might throw off the balance which will affect the way you feel about them. You take the high road and don’t leap to judgments. You can’t please everyone, and as we move toward the Festive time (remember when we were kids and Christmas was so FUN?) you may find that the demands and requests of others is too much. Focus on what means the most to you and stay there.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22): Mercury goes retrograde in earthy Capricorn this week, but it shouldn’t affect you adversely; just double check things and know that if someone else is handling a situation for you they’re likely to screw it up. No big deal. You’re buttoning things up now and thinking about making a move in a different direction, but hold off beginning until after the New Year arrives when Mercury has gone direct and you are more certain.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20): This is the latter week of your birthday month, so you’ve hopefully celebrated yourself adequately. Being of a generous nature, you might be running around doing things for others and neglecting tasks at home. Well, you know how far you can go, so no lectures (you don’t listen anyway). Stay focused on what you’re doing in the moment and don’t mentally launch yourself into the next task or you’ll have to repeat a chore; we all know what happens when you have to do that!

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19): Mercury goes retrograde in your sign this week, which may leave you feeling a bit confused about where you stand in the grand scheme of things. Thought you were the one in control, right? Hee hee. Butting heads isn’t going to get you anywhere but in bed with a headache, so turn your attention to what relaxes you, what soothes you, what rocks your soul. Everyone will benefit from that!

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19): Mercury retrogrades in Capricorn this week, and you may discover some things you missed in the translation. This will be a week of reflection and insight, amidst the chaos and business of preparing for Christmas. If something has been nagging at you, take care of it and clear your mind. Don’t fret about things that can’t be changed or controlled, just keep your eye on the big magic!

Pisces (February 20-March 20) Ha ha ha and ho ho ho! Be a kid and love the season! You can do what you want and be what you want, even if you can’t have what you want. The famous physicist Richard Feynman said he came to the realization that having what he wanted might not be good for him. What an insight! Trust that wise, inner being that you keep arguing with and take it out to see the holiday lights.
