The Sixth House
By Triana Èlan
January 5 - 11, 2004
The sixth House (sector) of the birth chart is a very critical section. It is often misunderstood, since it is multifaceted. This House is the last of the "personal" houses, the final House of relationship to self before going out into the world.
Ruled by Virgo, the sixth House if often referred to as the House of health and work. This is an easy reference, but for further analysis and for the sake of expansion, I prefer to use the great astrologer Dan Rudhyar’s words:
"Because the sixth House represents fundamentally everything that deals with personal crises and the way to meet them, it shows, more than any other factor in the whole of the astrological field, how an individual can grow and be transformed."
Pretty heavy stuff, and the sixth House is indeed a heavy House. It forces us to slow down and reevaluate when it’s activated by planetary influences.
Think about it...here we go, barreling through life, then wham! we get hurt, someone dies, we get fired or laid off, or we get sick. These are only a few life-altering situations, yet we often don’t pause to reflect and take a breath; we simply try to get out of the situation of crisis as fast as possible. This isn’t a bad thing, but hindsight and reflection are imperative for personal growth.
If a birth chart has a "loaded" sixth house, the individual will have had to take extra care to create a balance in life rather than take a lot for granted. An "empty" sixth House doesn’t mean there won’t be issues, for the sign on the cusp of this House will reveal how one deals with crises.
This House, more than any other, reveals the sand or bedrock foundation that our minds are built on.

Aries (March 21 - April 20): You have a blazing start to the new year, with Venus occupying electric Aquarius and Mars, your Ruler, in your sign. Other than Mercury being retrograde which is making things slower than you like, you’re set for enjoying the fruits of your labors. Saturn in Cancer hovers in your sector of home and hearth; you may be thinking about relocating or you are focusing on your living situation.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20): There is no stopping you, Little Bull! Now that you have the information you need and are barreling forward, you can take those steps with confidence. Yippee! Stash your coins, invest in yourself, get ready for a new cycle. Don’t let the little things get to you, and choose your battles and projects carefully. While Venus and Neptune both occupy impulsive Aquarius this month, you may be tempted to bite off more than you can chew, and this would kick you later. And you don’t like being kicked. Definitely not.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20): It’s cold, its dark, and you don’t like that. You’re a summer baby. In spite of the outer circumstances, though, you are able to make things sunny with your active imagination. These days see you communicating madly, your mind is spinning with ideas of expansion. Much of this is due to Pluto’s tour of your opposite sign of Sagittarius coming to fruition. Your ability to come out of your head and into the real world is strengthening! Do some mellow socializing and stay warm!

Cancer (June 21 - July 22): Mars in fiery Aries may see you all excited about something new unfolding in the area of your work. Perhaps a promotion is in order, or an expansion is moving forward after having lagged for too long. Mars was languishing in watery Pisces for an unheard of eight months (Mars’ usual transit through a sign is usually about six weeks) and it’s now free, free, free! This also gets you moving and feeling unencumbered. Go forth and do it!

Leo (July 23 - August 22): Mars in your companion fire sign Aries sparks you to move faster than your usual comfortable pace. Venus in your opposing sign of Aquarius may be a distraction to you, but if you manage to pony up with someone, you’ll get more done. You usually prefer to work solo but these times call for a team effort, so make the changes in your head that need to be made in order to open some new doors.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22): Good fortune continues to shine on you due to Jupiter’s tour in your sign. At the moment your best course forward is to keep a good sense of humor and focus on what’s going right. You do work hard, you like to play by the rules (well...) and you need a sense of structure to keep you sane. Knowing these things, it’s time to keep your resolve to move on and let bygones be bygones. Life’s too short to fret, so find a good adventure and have it!

Libra (September 23 - October 22): Mars is solidly in its own sign of Aries, which is your opposite sign. This means an emphasis on your relationship or marriage. If you’re planning a wee tryst, now is the time to go for it! If you’re solo and looking, don’t look...it will find you! But you have to expand your horizons beyond your immediate surroundings. As this week unfolds, try to stay balanced between work and play, down time and learning time. You can never learn enough, but be sure you apply what you learn!

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22): The Full Moon in Cancer on Wednesday has you in a sentimental mood; if this happens every year it’s likely because it’s the first Full Moon after Christmas. Hopefully you’re still glowing with the love an support of family and friends. Mars in fiery and companionable Aries is stimulating a new direction for you and an urge to push forward after feeling stalled out for quite a while. It’s a good time to make that move, Scorpio!

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20): As you collapse after the Holidays and flop down on the couch with the remote, know that a real change is occurring in the heavens...Uranus has left Aquarius forever and is now in Pisces, where it will be for seven years. It’s likely that the new year will see your services in demand, as others will have a harder time making up their minds. Your decisiveness will come in handy! But for now, rest. You’re gonna need it!

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19): An urge to clear out the dead wood has you scrambling to restore or establish some order. The first place to start is in your mind! Watching thoughts is an amazing discipline and can be very enlightening! Being a Cardinal sign, you are strong in starting things, but when they take on their own energy and personality, you get surprised. Turn your attention to a fun way to make some extra cash. This will lighten your spirit and move you away from disturbing thoughts.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19): Venus, planet of self worth, is in your sign and is shining brightly. Mars is in its own sign of fiery Aries, so you’re ready to have an adventure or two! Of your own choice, of course...you do like to call the shots! Mars is butting heads with Saturn, though, and this could see a problem with your home as in structural integrity. Shore up what you can, reinforce stuff, then go have your adventure. You’re spirit will be lighter for it.

Pisces (February 20-March 20) Okay so now we’re all done with the ring-a-ding-sing time, now what?! You get ready for your birthday, of course! Plan a really good one and let others know what you want to do. If you wait for everyone else to call the shots you’ll feel left out of your own party and you know how much that stings! The Full Moon in emotional Cancer on Wednesday fills your heart with benevolence and possibly calls on you to be somewhat of a hero.
