This week's Horoscope Column

The Ninth House

By Triana Èlan

January 26 - February 1, 2004

Where the third House in the birth chart relates to an individual coming to terms with him/herself, the opposite and complementary ninth House deals with expansion of the mind in a larger framework. This House relates to travel, higher education, religion, and any engagements of exploration outside of one’s own back yard.

Ruled by Jupiter, the ninth House belongs to Sagittarius; the arrow is always aimed toward the Heavens in a quest for understanding. Synthesis occurs in the ninth House, and what is anchored in the third House will expand and deepen in this House.

Planets occurring in this house will signify how one is likely to focus attained expansion, and how to best use this area of life. Afflicted planets here may encourage greed and disproportionate ambition, which may bring material wealth along with spiritual poverty and social erosion. Planets in this House that are well aspected encourage philosophical thinking and an open minded approach that benefits all concerned as much as possible.

The ninth House also relates to legal processes as well as the laws of nature; its function is the bringing together of many energies into a cohesive whole, within the confines of the laws. Writers will have a prominent planetary placement in this House, most commonly the Moon.

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
Mercury and Venus are running neck and neck in Capricorn and Pisces, respectively. This Earth/Water combination has you in an interesting frame of mind. Your sectors of career and inner changes are very active now; it’s likely you’re reconsidering your position in life in regard to what you really want to do with it. What makes your heart sing? It’s time to reevaluate a few things!

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Now you’re moving into a time where some things are moving fast. This is an interesting time of balance for you, and it may be difficult for you to find a comfort zone. Don’t fret, it will change soon. Things are very much in flux, but your inner sense of solidity is what always pulls you through. Venus and Mars are helping you with clarity now, so be sure to get adequate time to contemplate, to dream, to see your next step.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
Well my, my.....aren’t we in a dither? You’re having to juggle an awful lot right now, and it’s almost too much even for you. Once Mars and Venus move a little, it will calm down and you’ll have more solid information. By the end of the week, Venus and Pluto will be in a very powerful aspect to each other....this will be a potentially explosive time for you...big insights! So prepare!

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
Doggone it, having Saturn in your sign really has you smoking in some ways, and you’re a bit stressed (understatement?). Planetary influences are very powerful now and Saturn’s heavy influence will have an effect on your for quite a while to come; combined with the influence of Mercury in Capricorn, you have your hands full! Try not to start anything new or add more to your plate.

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
While some planets are arguing, others are singing....for you, Mars and Pluto are getting along nicely and this is where your strength is coming from. You are closing in on something important to you, and the end is in sight. That feels good! Don’t let yourself get distracted, stay focused on the goal and try not to compromise too much. A little, yes, but not too much. Quality is the key word now.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
As Venus glides into an antagonistic position with Mars, you may be feeling pressure to make up your mind. Venus is the planet of self worth, and if you’re been acting like a martyr, you’ll be found out. Change that attitude! Pluto in fiery, blunt Sagittarius isn’t about to let anyone get away with anything. This combination will make for an interesting time for you as we move into February. Buck up and soldier on!

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
Young Librans feel pressured and somewhat frantic as Mercury and Mars come to blows with each other in Capricorn and Aries. This creates a stress that makes you feel like you have to DO something, but WHAT? Take some deep breaths and wait. If you can’t control it, you’ll have to wait it out. You older Librans are likely tearing your hair out over finances. Well, it is coming up to tax time and that’s never fun. You may have to cut back for a little while, which you do as long as you can still be generous...well, you can’t be quite so generous right now. Have patience.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
You lover intensity, except when it takes you by surprise. At the moment it looks like someone is putting the spurs to you to force you into a decision you’re not ready to make. Rather than get all twisted about it, back off for a little while. Ask yourself how you got yourself this far in the situation, then your answers about what to do will become clear. It’s hard for you to expand, since you are a contracted sign, but practice makes perfect.....and now is a good time to practice!

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
Well doggone it, things refuse to settle down. You are a dynamic sign, but long overdue for a respite. Cut back. Don’t do anything that isn’t necessary. This stress is going to ease in the next week, so you’re almost at the end of it. Take extra care now, though...Venus in indecisive Pisces squares up with Pluto in your sign. Don’t be tempted to chase shadows! This is a very powerful time with long reaching effects, so make your decisions with extra care.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Well, now we move into a time where you have a chance to grab hold of something that you like. And you’ll enjoy it! You like to have control, and you are also very opinionated. Relax your opinions and embrace other thoughts. Analysis is dry and only goes so far; you have a chance to exercise your intuition now. Reach out into the mind of another in order to gain a full understanding.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Now we are in your time of the year, and you’re feeling energized. The Sun kisses elusive Neptune in your sign, and for a little while they will be in concert. This will boost your ability to see the far horizons, and encourage you to jump out of the mental box. Being the one who is the humanitarian, you are visiting new ways to get the job done that you are here to do. Even if that means delegating part of it to someone else (release control???? Gasp)!

Pisces (February 20-March 20): Venus in your own dear sign takes a swat at Pluto in reckless Sagittarius. This may spur you to take a risk, and the outcome is inconclusive. Well, when have you ever passed up an adventure? Aye, matie! Put on your swashbuckling clothes and try something new. Inspiration comes from not knowing, and this is a good time for you to be inspired. Use it!
