Chinese New Year

By Triana Èlan

Saturday, February 1, was the first day of the Chinese New Year. We are now in the year of the Black Sheep, and have exited the year of the Black Horse. According to the Chinese zodiac, the Black (water) Sheep year is one that heralds compassion and nurturing.

This coincides with violent Uranus leaving its own sign of Aquarius next month, touching into Pisces and marking the end of a generation.

It is becoming more and more difficult to focus on the good, the simple, the quiet. These are not happy times. They may be for some individuals or groups or families, but for the collective, we’re going through the fire.

One thing I find fascinating is looking at the lunar positions of our two space shuttle disasters; on January 27, 1986, we lost the Challenger. The Sun was in Aquarius, the moon was Full, in Leo (which is opposite Aquarius). Saturday’s Columbia loss saw the Sun in Aquarius once again, and the Moon was also in Aquarius; it was the day of a New Moon.

One shuttle lost going up, one lost coming down, during opposing signs and phases of the Moon.

Significant? Probably not. But it is an interesting coincidence. Many ancient calendar systems are based on lunar systems, and the Chinese system is no different.

The Chinese New Year is determined by the first New Moon following February 1st.

This date, February 1st, also marks St. Brigid’s Day which has its origins in Celtic mythology. It one of the fire festivals still observed in some parts of Europe and the UK marking the midpoint between the Celtic New Year (November 1) and Beltaine (May 1).

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
Mercury and Venus will both occupy bossy Capricorn for the next ten days. Your patience is going to wear thin and you may be tempted to throw the baby out with the bath water. That wouldn’t be wise, Aries...you must think of the long-term and do a bit more research before you assume you know everything there is to know. Don’t jump to any conclusions!

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
With Mercury and Venus occupying your fellow Earth sign Capricorn, you feel the urge to begin (finally!). While a guarantee is something you consistently seek, you must accept that there are none and move forward anyway. Counting on someone else to “do it for you” won’t work, either. What you have going for you is hard-won. Don’t throw it away!

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
You’re able to come to earth for a little while and figure out where you are. If you don’t like where you are, look to your own mind for the solutions. Being a mutable (and therefore adaptable) sign, you’re most comfortable when you can figure things out. At the same time, you’re able to turn on a dime. Simply amazing. It looks like a very productive week for you; enjoy it!

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
While you’re somewhat forced to come out of your shell, you’re getting more comfortable thanks to someone close to you. Some parts of this period of time are a repeat or readdressing of situations from seven to nine years ago. What was left undone then is returning to you for your attention. Don’t shy away from what you’re responsible for.

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
You have a tender heart and an iron will; this could be why others misinterpret your intentions. With the chaos going on in the heavens and an ominous New Moon on Saturday the 1st, you’ll want to lay low for a while and do some serious soul searching. Jupiter sleeping (retrograde) in your sign could cause some backfires, so take good care of yourself!

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
Finally, some semblance of order seems to be emerging, with Mercury and Venus both in your fellow Earth sign Capricorn. The next two weeks will be critical for you, especially if you are changing jobs, moving, or in the process of a promotion. Rapid movement can be expected in your own progress, so make the most of it.

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
No, it’s not over yet. Hanging onto old baggage isn’t going to do you any good, with Life moving so very fast. This is a time to move swiftly yet carefully. Your attention shifts to others in need, but be sure you have it to give before you make any promises. As much as you’d love to just get away, you won’t find much relief in that way just yet. Keep your health up and get plenty of fresh air.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
Saturday’s New Moon hit pretty hard, and you’re likely no exception. You may be unexpectedly called to something of great importance. Don’t hesitate. If you’ve been feeling broody, you’re normal. If you think “it’s all good,” you’re in denial. Simply see what is there and act accordingly. That’s all there is to it.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
Yours is the sign of the Adventurer, but as Saturday’s New Moon in Aquarius showed, adventure has a price. Still, you are not deterred from your goal. Finances ease up during the first two weeks of the month, then get progressively better for you (remember last week I said the D word: Discipline!). Now more than ever you must believe in yourself.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Venus glides into your sign this week, brining welcome relief. You’ve been struggling with issues of self-worth, and you might want to seek a good professional to work with to bring you through. Although you like to be independent, no one is an island and isolating yourself isn’t a good thing right now.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Venus, the planet governing self worth and intimacy, enters your Solar house of unconscious motives, spirituality and transformation. Although Venus is not a generational planet, she still packs a wallop. This might be a good period of time to pursue a different outlook on spirituality or your own relationship with your higher power. Great strides can be taken in that area now.

Pisces (February 20-March 20)
This is definitely a time to not take things personally. The good news for you is, you have a window of ten days to take something to the next level. Get busy! Being afraid won’t help, being humble is out of style. Just get out there and do it. While it’s difficult to not get emotional these days, don’t let your emotions swamp you.
