If Only We’d Known

Okay, we’re in the thick of a very dark time in world history and its ramifications and legacy are yet to be revealed. This column is intended to compliment David Bentley’s Outside the Box column for this week. Here’s a different spin:
How many times have we taken a hindsight look at our choices and actions and said, "If I knew then what I know now..."
Dr. Phil McGraw contends that as we know more, we do better. and this is true. Rather than scurry into our cubbies and stay glued to CNN, let’s take an opportunity to do something different.
We know that stress levels and a sense of despair are high. We know that we are engaged in a big Unknown. Uncertainty is everywhere. We do not do well under those conditions. No animal does.
While we cannot predict the immediate future, we can focus on the moment we’re in and the quality of it. If we are in our own heads trying to predict, we don’t notice another’s need. If we become too self-absorbed with our own feelings and thoughts, we become selfish and insensitive. We can’t use the state of the world as an excuse to stop our lives, our goals and our goodwill.
Does your neighbor or an acquaintance need something you can give? It doesn’t have to be much, maybe just a phone call or a custard or some flowers to cheer up a room.
If we focus too much on what we need ourselves, the probability of our getting our needs met goes down. It’s one of those funny things about the way the Universe works. However, if we give out what we need, we suddenly experience a miracle. Do you need attention? Give attention to someone else. Do you have a craving for chocolates? Give someone a chokkie and watch them smile. Do you need comfort? Give it to someone.
We are the wealthiest country in the world, yet in many ways we are the most spiritually impoverished. Giving feeds the soul. Giving with no expectation of return is true wealth. We each have something to give for a moment. It’s not about money. It’s about Spirit.
Aries (March 21 - April 20):
This week starts out with a bang for you as the Moon swings into friendly Sagittarius and blows a kiss to Mercury, which now occupies your sign. Now listen, Aries, there is intensity here and to be very, very honest, if you have a problem with alcohol you could fall off the wagon due to intense feelings. Don’t go there. Deal with your feelings and move your body around. Hard work is good for the soul.
Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Mars in intelligent Capricorn is on your side in a big way, giving you the courage and impetus to mobilize. Your biggest problem is inertia but now you’re no doubt feeling your rockets firing. Do you have a goal to move all that energy toward? If not, you’d better get one, even if it’s small and humble. Uranus in Pisces also help you out by unblocking your creative juices. Get out there and get your prize!
Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
Venus sails into Pisces this week and gives a nudge to Uranus, who is already there. This could find you making major strides in the areas of work, travel and education. Also spirituality. You may be compelled to seek a different avenue of spiritual study now. Being the consummate student and an avid reader, you will find your inspiration in this area that will propel you into your next adventure.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
Mighty Uranus and powerful Venus kiss each other in your fellow water sign of Pisces. This is likely to bring about major changes for you in one of two ways: if you’re the Pity-Pot type, you’ll find a worthy throne to sit on for a while, but you will run short of an audience. If you’re the self-starting type, this is the time to cash in your chips and move forward with confidence. Your choice, Moonchild! Make it good.
Leo (July 23 - August 22):
Some surprises in your sector of business and shared assets come up beginning this week, so be watchful! If you’ve been seeking to gain some amount of control, now is the time to make your move. Use your natural grace and class to secure your new position. Your loyalty and integrity will see you to the next level.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
Transform, mutate, adjust. It’s a good thing you’re a mutable sign! The next couple of weeks hold the potential of propelling you into a deeper sense of introspection and some pretty heavy soul-searching. This falls in the area of marriage and relationship. Maybe you and your sweetie just want to get outta Dodge and take a break. Do it!
Libra (September 23 - October 22):
Having had to revamp a whole bunch of stuff, you’re ready to deploy your new strategy. Good for you! In these tenuous times of uncertainty (which you can’t stand because you are very mental), you have an opportunity to do something in a whole new way. Risks? Of course! But nothing worthwhile is without risk. Keep your wits about you and success if yours.
Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
Venus now moves into Pisces and kisses up to life-altering Uranus which is newly occupying that same sign. This has you waxing nostalgic and looking back at past mistakes or choices that were not well made. No use blaming or crying over spilled milk. You can’t undo what’s been done, so your best tactic is to right the wrongs as best you can and vow to not repeat yourself. Focus on the good, the proud, the high road.
Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
Yes, you do have to put up with the weepy feeling of those around you. You are a strong and adventurous type, not given to the suck and drag of high emotion and drama. These days it’s hard to avoid, but pull out your compassion and empathy cards; they will get you a lot further than the blunt edge you usually use. The idea now is not to alienate, but to help reassemble a stronger unit.
Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Have you thrown up your hands and said "Oh, WELL!" yet? As events and people around you get ever more muddied, keep your clarity and single-minded intent intact. It may not be to your advantage to share these traits due to the preference of others to indulge in irrational thought and behavior. Wait it out and quietly occupy yourself with worthy activities.
Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
You can’t save the world, but you can get your own head into a better space. Fluidity is a good thing, but unreliability is not. If you say you’re going to do something, do it. Double standards will not work very well now. It’s difficult for you to not have your own way, but the more you fight for control the less ground you will gain. Time for a new outlook, consider that your own judgments may not be well placed, and keep an open mind.
Pisces (February 20-March 20)
A change for the better is on the horizon for you in terms of finances. This is good! Cast your eye for a worthy job that will feed your soul. From there, the filling of the bank account will follow. Don’t wimp out, you can do it! You’ve endured very untrustworthy times, but now you are gaining personal power at an unprecedented rate. Unleash your creative thinking, put your money where your mouth is (funny one, that...if you’re broke I guess you can’t talk).
