May Events: Coming Out Of the Darkness

April 28- May 4, 2003

By Triana Èlan

As we begin to come out from under a very intense winter, the sun is beginning to thaw out frozen nerves and our little county is preparing for summer and whatever it will bring.

I love the Old Religion and some of its traditions. Thursday is May 1, the ancient celebration of Beltain with its bonfires and symbology of abundance.

In the Celtic tradition, there are eight fire festivals, each honoring the two solstices and equinoxes plus their midpoints. Beltain is one of those midpoints, marking the midpoint between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.

When I lived in England, I noticed that Beltain was observed still, even though the toned down version of it, called May Day, has long eclipsed the revelry of old.

To celebrate Beltain, one would build a bonfire and conduct prayers to the Earth, honoring the four directions (as in Native American ritual) and asking for the Earth’s blessing for a good growing season. Food would be shared, music played to sing to our planet, stories told. This would go on all night long, the fires sparking and burning the old dead wood of a long winter.

Those of you who are well versed in the strictly traditional aspects of Beltain will notice that I left some things out. It’s not that I don’t know these things, but some of the old rituals are inappropriate for today’s society.

The whole point of Beltain is to thank the Mother for her blessings and to pledge to nurture Her. Seeing as how Earth Day just passed (too bad they didn’t schedule Earth Day on May 1), this might be a good time to pledge to clean up, to wipe out the winter blues from within us, to reconnect with friends and to come up with some good ideas for the immediate future.

This Beltain is also the night of the New Moon in Taurus, a powerful Earth sign. It’s extra special.

There’s nothing like a bonfire to bring up the mythical human, the ancient hominid that rose to its current status in nature (for better or for worse). To have a campfire or a bonfire is a real treat, a time to reflect and to Remember what is good and warm and real.

And keeping up with the times, don’t forget to get a burn permit!

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
Don’t worry about Mercury being retrograde, just don’t spend too much money. You may end up with an unexpected, big expense in the next three weeks that you’ll need that cash for (if you have no cash, do a garage sale and get some. You don’t need all that stuff anyway). In general, the planets are on your side, so don’t forget to practice gratitude!

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Mercury is now retrograde in your sign for the next three weeks. Take no prisoners. This period of time is about you living up to your promises...to yourself. You know what you want, but getting it seems so distant. Start learning during this three weeks. Use your time well and don’t be swayed by anyone or anything.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
Saturn will be moving out of your sign in early June. What a time it’s been! Mercury, your Ruler, is now retrograde in Taurus. This could unseat some things you thought were solid. Hopefully you’ve learned by now that assuming is useless. That leads to disappointment and bitterness. Rely on yourself, your talent, your mind and your wit. Shore up your talents and put them out there.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
Stern Saturn is eyeing your sign, Moonchild! Talk to your Gemini friends to see what to expect from June onward for the next two and a half years. Funnily enough, your finances appear to have evened out, even though the economy is wretched. Nurture what you have and refrain from expansion. Your plate is full enough. All things are temporary, including the feasts and famines. Be sure you and yours are okay.

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
Mercury is retrograde in Taurus, and for the next three weeks you may have a worry over job, retirement funds, or something else related to a job or career, past or present. It will tie into your residence somehow but it’s not anything to worry about. Just keep an eye on things. Your den is, after all, the most important thing to you second only to your hair! This is a time of opportunity for you too, in the realm of new ventures. Looking good, in general.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
Uranus in your opposite sign of Pisces is only getting started revolutionizing your sense of relationship and how you react to the world around you. No need to hurry, you’ll have eight years of this to get it straight. Wow, just like going to college (again). In fact, if you’re able to further your education, now would be a good time to do that any way you can. Stay on top of the trends and use your inner wisdom to know how to surf them.

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
If only, it shoulda, woulda, coulda. Wah. Enough tantrums. Dry your tears, get up off the floor, and put off signing any contracts for three weeks (Mercury is retrograde). Hunker down and stay focused. Remember that little attention thing? Hey, Libra, there are no guarantees. Security can be a fleeting thing, but you are a good person capable of living a good life. So do it.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
Mercury is retrograde in your opposite sign of Taurus, so expect the unexpected in relationship. Long standing opinions and strong convictions can appear now, and with all the tensions in the air they could get destructive. Try not to go there. This doesn’t mean you should take evasive action. It means own up to your stuff and be sure the other party is owning up to theirs as best they can. This is an intense time, so be sure you get the rest and space you need to cope with it.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
You’re such a freedom-fighter, be sure you’re not fighting with the mirror! A simple switch in attitude makes a world of difference, and now you’ll be able to see the surface after having spent a lot of time in the depths. Sometimes it’s easier to just look at the surface and not get too curious. Take that strategy for now. Others may not be responding the way you’d wish them to, but never mind. It’s time for some new folks to move into your life anyway.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
You are such a worker bee! Always climbing that mountain. Now don’t forget, the original depiction of Capricorn is that of the sea-goat. You are equally capable of introspection and finding the inner silence. Let’s just not unleash you onto a cause! With Mercury retrograde in your fellow Earth sign Taurus, this would be a good time to use the wisdom of speaking when you have something to say rather than speaking because you need to say something.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Mercury retrograde in Taurus for the next three weeks likely brings up the issue of home again. If you’re planning repairs, great. If you’re considering a remodel, be sure you have all angles covered so mistakes don’t get made that could cost you dearly down the road. Being the humanitarian, you want to believe others, but since you live inside your own mind, you’re truly the only one you’re ever dealing with. If you don’t take the helm, don’t be surprised if the ship sinks! Ooooh, fodder for a control issue!

Pisces (February 20-March 20)
It’s not your fault. Whatever it is, it’s not your fault. It’s not anyone else’s fault, either. It just is. Now many ways are there to say "get on with it?" Except you’re mighty confused about what to get on with! It’s very difficult for you to make a solid decision since you’re so watery and worried. But put on your pith helmet and make an expedition into your own life, one jungle at a time.
