David Does It Again

May 12-18, 2003

By Triana Èlan

Once again, I want to commend David Bentley for the sharing of a wonderful experience with a labyrinth.

David’s column reminded me of the fact that the sacred and the profane are all within one’s perception. We are drawn to unusual things such as a labyrinth, sometimes without knowing why, as was the case with the young people in David’s story. These kids were walking the labyrinth because it was fun. Yet they were respectful. How wonderful and refreshing.

Symbols, myths, rituals, "sacred" objects are important only to those who assign such meaning to them, and to those who believe such meanings. Things that are a mystery are attractive, no doubt about it.

Since time immemorial, whatever has been sacred has been kept out of the realm of the general public, and with good reason. If something is truly sacred and precious, it’s kept under lock and key.

Usually we consider sacred things to be something in the realm of the religious. According to standard philosophy, religion is simply an organized group that practices certain rites on a regular basis. Walking a labyrinth can become a religion. Anything can become a religion.

Krishnamurti once said that you can put something on your mantle or little shrine and chant "Coca-Cola" at it ten times a day, and if you do that with the same inner devotion as you do with any Buddhist chant you’ll get the same results.

What is truly sacred is not seen. What compelled these young kids to walk the new labyrinth with respect is the sacred thing. Whatever was going on inside of them is what is important. It obviously didn’t matter that they didn’t know the history or the importance of the labyrinth to some. They were simply attracted to it and they walked it. How lovely. And with respect. Marvelous.

Each of our lives is sacred to us. The outer quality of our lives is in flux always, but since, like it or not, our ultimate destiny is to evolve, the sacred must be kept alive within each of us. Nobody owns what is sacred. Nobody can touch it or speak it or sing it or read it or even pray it. What is truly sacred is not a function of the mind. And the mind is not its master. The mind is only a tool.

Let’s remember these things as we come out of a terrible winter and greet the tourists. Sometimes people need to be reminded to be respectful. Respect can’t be demanded or browbeaten into anyone. But a tactful reminded is sometimes all that’s needed to avert a conflict.

But let’s also remember that respect begins at home. A community that is respectful of itself will reflect that to the visitors, who will respond to the mystery that they can only feel.

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
YThe total lunar eclipse in Scorpio on Thursday may bring about some intense restructuring for you in the coming months. This is an interesting mix for you. Watch your thoughts! If you really want something you’re sure to get it...then what? Think ahead, examine all possibilities for better or worse. Then decide, and go for it. Or not.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Thursday’s lunar eclipse falls in your opposite sign of Scorpio, bringing about subsequent changes in close relationships. Perhaps someone new will enter your life, or perhaps you’ll attract someone you never would have considered before. Venus moves into your sign on Saturday, bringing three weeks of rising self-esteem and soul searching. Good!

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
The lunar eclipse in Scorpio on Thursday falls into your sector of health. This brings a year of health-related issues for you, but not necessarily illness if you take care of yourself. If you haven’t had a physical for a while, now would be a good time to take care of that. Another influence of the lunar eclipse may bring about a new position for you at work. Prepare for (more) changes!

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
Thursday’s lunar eclipse could have a very strong effect on you, since the Moon is your Ruler and the eclipse takes place in intense Scorpio. This event occurs in your sector of self-expression, love affairs and children. If your children are grown and gone and not in touch, try to establish a new relationship with them. But only if you miss them. Not everybody does. Control issues could emerge now as well. Be careful of those!

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
You might be thinking about changing locations or doing a remodel, since Thursday’s lunar eclipse falls in your sector of Home. In the coming months, a makeover in the residence department looks likely. An eclipse is about new beginnings, which are triggered by endings. It’s always nice when the endings are your own choice! But if not, roll with it.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
The lunar eclipse on Thursday will occur in your sector of short journeys. Are we planning a wee getaway? Maybe a romantic rendezvous? This is a very productive time for you, in potential, so if you have any negative thinking going on, get rid of it on Thursday night. Have a little dinner party and watch the eclipse with your friends. They’re pretty awe-inspiring!

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
Changes in your finances are likely in the coming months; Thursday’s lunar eclipse is the harbinger of a radical change in the way you feel about your resources. Perhaps you’re ready to offload extra stuff. If you do, don’t replace it with new stuff. Just let the space be empty for a while. Gee, too bad you can’t do that with your active brain! Darned thing never gives you a moment’s rest, does it?!

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
Okay, so your only Full Moon of the year is eclipsed on Thursday. Wah. It happens. Don’t let yourself get all bent out of shape over stuff; control most certainly isn’t the path to take these days, but management is. Manage what you have, look at your life in a different light. See yourself as others may see you. This doesn’t mean you should project, but use caution when your emotions get all charged up.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
Thursday’s lunar eclipse in Scorpio falls in your eleventh house, sector of hopes and dreams and friendships. Over the next year you’ll find your goals changing and also your circle of friends. Thursday night would be a great evening to reflect on the balance between you and others. Chances are, you’ll find that you’ve been more on the giving end than the receiving end. Change that. Now.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Thursday night’s lunar eclipse in intense Scorpio gives you a chance to reevaluate yourself in terms of career and how you feel about your work goals. In these uncertain times, changes are inevitable, and you hate nothing more than not being in charge! But you’ll have to let the control thing go for now. It will pass, but it’s going to take a while. If you’re self-employed you might want to learn a new skill to add to your repertoire.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Thursday night sees the Scorpio Full Moon in eclipse. This is a very powerful time for you, especially if you’re a female. Since it occurs in your sector of higher education, long-distance travel and spirituality, it will bring about opportunities for you to take a fresh approach in these areas. This is a time to move aside and let your higher being take over since your mind is a mess with all that’s going on around you.

Pisces (February 20-March 20)
Oh, wow. Thursday night’s lunar eclipse in Scorpio should bring about the boon you’ve been needing. Look for new avenues of assistance and a potential business or life partner in the coming months. This eclipse brings you into the mode of joining with others rather than isolating yourself. No two ways about it, the winter within you is about to come to an end!
