Step By Step, Inch By Inch

May 26 - June 1, 2003

By Triana Èlan

It appears that history is repeating itself. It becomes disturbing that second-guessing turns out to be a wise thing to do. It didn’t used to be. But more and more, we are forced to quickly analyze, second guess, and try to beat others to the punch.

It’s been said that desperate times call for desperate measures. The problem is, desperate measures only fix things for a little while. Some things do not change.

The Buddhists say that all things are impermanent. Yet we are creatures of habit. How do we live in perpetual transition and stay rooted at the same time? People come up with amazing ways of coping with constant change. We are adaptable creatures, yet we can only take so much before the structural integrity of our psychological being begins to fail.

There is no new advice nor any revolutionary solution to be had. It’s all been said before, it’s all there. Solutions abound and there is truly a solution to every problem, since the problem contains the solution. Since our problems are unique to us but not to humanity, and since we do live in a country where we can have choices, we need to expand ourselves to accommodate options we wouldn’t otherwise consider.

We work hard, and time seems to be the thing most people lack. Time to rest, to reflect, to think clearly. With the daily demands of modern life and the heavy demands of making ends meet, how on earth do we find the time?

Five minutes. I wrote this before and I’ll say it again...take five minutes when we first wake up. Don’t go flying out of bed to launch into the day aggressively. Take five minutes to just lay there and breathe, to pray, to empty the mind of things that haven’t happened yet. Five minutes to affirm the quality of our inner lives, to strengthen ourselves. Just five minutes every day, first thing.

Step by step, we’ll get through this mess. Granted, we didn’t create it, but we definitely did take part in it, knowingly or not. And we’ll get through it. Together. There is nothing on Earth stronger than friendship and community.

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
Well now we come into quite a nutty time. Watch the choices you make now, Aires, for they will have long-term effects. It’s hard for you to think beyond the moment and you’re usually on the optimistic side. Now, though, you may find yourself running against the current of authority. Yuck. Best advice: think twice.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Mercury in your sign decides to take a swat at Neptune in equally stubborn Aquarius this week. You’ll want to do a reality check in the judgment department. Sometimes you can get pretty high and mighty, with ideals not in balance with what’s going on. Get unstuck and get on with it! You are a solid sign, yes. But right now fluidity is the way through.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
Be careful this week, Twin. Your Ruler Mercury occupies Taurus and decides to take a swat at elusive Neptune in Aquarius. If you’re being extreme about something, it’s gonna hurt sooner or later. The Sun will undergo a partial eclipse in your sign on Friday too, so for now, cool your jets, chill out, get quiet inside. You’ll know when it’s right to take action. Don’t be impulsive though.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
Friday’s partial solar eclipse falls in your sector of Endings. You’re about to close one chapter and open another one. With your tendency to cling, your little claws may have to loosen or clamp down on vapor (you hate that). Now that doesn’t mean you need to get scared, but something you’re attached to is likely to change in the next six months. And it could change to something better than you can even imagine right now!

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
Friday’s solar eclipse in your solar house of friendships, hopes and dreams will bring about a change in your ideas for your own future. This will be about a six-month process, so don’t expect it to happen tomorrow. This is good, because you don’t like sudden changes. Make room for some new people in your life who will be beneficial.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
Now that summer’s right around the corner, you’re clearing out the internal closets and taking stock. What will you do now? Continue to look and move forward. Yesterday is finished and now is what is important. Take the time to be in touch with your loved ones and close friends. Return a favor. Do something for someone for no reason. Make yourself smile!

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
One foot in front of the other is how it feels now. Well, at least things are coming together. You’ve no doubt been feeling like you’re on a treadmill, but all you have to do to stop that is take one foot off and put it on the ground. You’ll feel the difference right away and you may even get brave enough to put the other foot on the ground, too! Then watch the magic fly. Wow!

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
In the instance that you get impatient, take a look at the dynamics of communication. Mercury occupies your opposite sign of Taurus and is blowing raspberries at evasive Neptune in Aquarius. If you were born the first week of November, you may be experiencing squabbles and feel like nobody’s "getting it." This may be true, but be responsible for how your point comes across.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
Just as we swing into your opposite point of the year, you may be still trying to gather steam to be up to the challenge. With the past two years of your life taken up with some difficult lessons due to Saturn’s position, you’re more than ready to make some sweeping changes! Just don’t burn any bridges. Heighten your sensitivity to others and don’t forget to take care of yourself!

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Take care not to pull the wool over your own eyes, Cappie! You are doggone swift when it comes to making decisions, but if you don’t make up your mind as well, there’s a problem. Squabbles and arguments with others close to you are likely if everyone is attacking something from a different angle. Use your diplomacy and good judgment to proceed and refrain from making issues "all about you" or "all about them."

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Mercury opposing Neptune could throw a wrench in your plans. Luckily, these things don’t upset you. You are an idealist at heart, and you do try to throw everyone in the best light possible (most of all yourself!). If you’re the Saturnine type of Aquarian, then you’re likely fixated on each and every worst case scenario you can think of. In any event, your mind is highly creative now. Use it for the Good!

Pisces (February 20-March 20)
"Can’t you see it?" is your outcry of the day. No, most likely they can’t. Your inner world is such a rich strata of emotions and vivid images that you can easily get lost in those nebulous worlds. Just remember, they are your worlds, no one else’s. So no, maybe they just can’t see it. Just be glad that you do, whatever it is. Now figure out what to do with that vision.
