The Best Philosophy

June 2-8, 2003

By Triana Èlan

The Desiderata

written by Max Ehrmann (1872-1945)

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble,
it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
Here we come into a time of extreme learning for you...Saturn, the stern teacher, guide and imposer of lessons, squares up with your sign for the next two years. Saturn moves into Cancer this week, which will affect your solar sector of home environs. It’s time to shore things up on the home front, because the focus will be there. Pay attention!

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Saturn ends its annoying trip through Gemini this week and moves into homey, nurturing Cancer. This is a nice transit for you; it falls in your sector of education, commerce and short journeys. Looks like your journeys will be for a purpose of expansion rather than vacationing. This is good. This marks a brand new two year trend for you. You’ll like it!

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
Finally Saturn leaves your sign and slides into Cancer this week. This means a focus on finances for the next two years. You may not have the money you think you should have, especially if you’re talented or artistic. You’ll need to come to terms with the concept “labor of love.” You’ll be restructuring your whole sense of self-worth for the better.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
This week, Saturn sails into your sign for the next couple of years. Now the spotlight’s on you! Your entire sense of self-image will be restyled; this hasn’t occurred for the last twenty-nine years, so depending on your age, you’re either embarking on an incredible journey or reaping the lessons from the last one! The next couple of years are likely to be intense in one way or another. Make them good years.

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
Saturn’s entrance into your House of Endings for the next two years recalls where you were about thirty years ago. What were your goals? How have you changes/adapted? Have you sold out on yourself? Better not have, because Saturn’s going to remove what stands between you and what you really want during the next two years. Get clear!

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
Saturn moves into Cancer this week and signals a radical change in your social surroundings. Perhaps you’ve been the leader or instigator or scapegoat or martyr. Well guess what, Virgo...for the next couple of years you get to be appreciated by others! These lessons will come in fits and spurts, not all at once every day. But look at who your friends are. Who’s healing who?!

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
This week rings in the beginning of two years’ worth of life-altering circumstances (just like the last two have been, but in a different way!). Saturn moves into the sign of watery Cancer, a fellow Cardinal sign. This will be a period of opportunities and lessons in the area of career, your upbringing in work ethics, and reflection on where you stand in the work place. More changes for you coming up, so get out there and learn stuff!

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
Saturn moves into your fellow water sign Cancer this week, bringing in a two year phase of structure and focus on legal matters, long distance travel, religion and higher education. Not all at once, however. But since this Saturn transit is beneficial for you, if you haven’t furthered your education, it’s time to get on with it. These two years are going to be much easier to deal with than the last two have been.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
Saturn finally moves into Cancer this week after giving you a couple of years’ worth of "aggro" while it was occupying your opposite sign of Gemini. Now things change for the better. Your focus will move out of relationship and into the realm of shared assets and business partnerships. The next two years will be good for building alliances with really good people who care about you and your dreams. Fools be gone!

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Saturn moves into your opposite sign of Cancer this week, casting your focus on intimate relationships and the lessons they have to bring. Whether you’re attached or not, "The Other" will bring out a depth you haven’t experienced ever if you’re young. If you’re a mature adult, it’s been nearly thirty years since this transit occurred. Think back and reap the benefits of what you’ve learned. Now you have a chance to break outmoded habits.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Saturn, your co-ruler, slides into Cancer this week. Your focus for the next couple of years will be in the area of work and health. Health issues could arise for you in the next two years, especially if your work isn’t truly suited to you. A change of jobs may occur, or the focus may be on a health problem. Now is the time to get pro-active and keep up with your checkups. Remember, this is a two year process. Stay healthy!

Pisces (February 20-March 20)
So now Saturn, the Cosmic Spoilsport, moves into your fellow water sign of Cancer this week. During the ensuing two year transit, your major focus will be in the area of self-expression, children and aspects of love. For two years, Saturn was in Gemini, and your lack of focus was your downfall. Now you’ll feel a sense of relief and renewal, exploring new fields of interest that appeal to your heart. Yahoo!
