Starting Over

July 14 - 20 , 2003

By Triana Èlan

Sorry about not having a column last week, I was very ill with a virus. All better now, so on we go.

I’ve been observing people in all forms of transition lately, whether in person, in the news, on the internet or at work. There are not many people I come across who are not in a state of some kind of major change. We don’t like change unless it rings in our pockets. We especially don’t like change if it is imposed upon us.

Many of us in the Boomer generation are being forced to reassess, regroup, recover or re-something. The prefix "re-" always means "to do it again." Hmmm, wonder how that applies to repeat, redundant and reduce.

Anyway, these times are very demanding, somewhat destructive and certainly life-altering. The stress level is very high everywhere, and folks are caving in. There are many different reasons why, but asking "why" doesn’t really do any good under the circumstances. Asking "how did I let this happen?" approaches appropriate thinking to rise to the occasion.

Many of us are having to start over because of a major rug being yanked out from under us. We react in our own individual ways, and since many of us haven’t had to endure times like these before, we get to make our own unique mistakes. Yet there seems to be an enormous amount of fear about making mistakes, failing, falling short, disappointing or being disappointed.

Only a few years ago, Joseph Campbell was the order of the day, reminding us of how critical mythology is to our collective spirit. Women were rebelling against their prescribed roles and running with the wolves. People were hugging and banging on drums. We Ohm’ed and we held hands and we tried and tried to reconnect (a lot of "re-" prefixes in this little rambling). Did it make us better people? Only within ourselves do we know.

Starting over after the playing field has been levelled is not easy. Whether the field is within us or in the material world, it’s tiring to have to get up one more time. But then, some say that success is simply getting up one more time than we fall down.

Here’s to a new success!

Aries (March 21 - April 20):
Mercury slides into fiery, generous Leo this week. You have a good chance to make some expansive moves in the direction of your main interests. Getting things started is never a problem for you; staying with them is. Take your goal in chunks that are manageable, such as in days rather than weeks or weeks rather than months. Get some solid advice from someone who really knows their stuff and move forward.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20):
Okay Bull, we’re getting a buildup of Leo energy here this month, meaning attention to home or real estate or renovations is likely to occur sooner than you anticipated. Since the weather has been so unseasonably warm and dry, be sure your home is safe from a fire (Leo is a fire sign). I only say this because you don’t want to have to do a remodel due to damage of some kind! If you’re considering relocating, now is the time to start the process.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):
No doubt things are livening up now! The Cancer energy of earlier this month shifts to Leo, and your ruling planet Mercury enters that sign today (Monday). It will remain there for three weeks, encouraging you to make some plans for a wee vacation or a visit with people you haven’t seen for a while. Mars and Uranus continue to occupy Pisces, throwing you into indecision about action over the long term. Advice: Don’t deal with the long term just yet. Wait until Mars moves.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):
The heavenly influences continue to keep you in a flow that is active and rather demanding, but this is good...it keeps you out of trouble! Your determination is amazing and so is your ability to keep your eye on your goal. You don’t give up. Ever. Once you’ve dug your little crab claws into an idea, it becomes a part of you and you’re on it! This is a very busy time for you, and a time of expansion and change. Keep going!

Leo (July 23 - August 22):
Spotlight turns to you, Leo! Mercury moves into your sign now, and Venus will follow later in the month, joining the Sun and Jupiter in Leo then as well. Nearly half the planets will be in your sign for a little while, and you’re really expending a lot of energy! Don’t forget to stop and recharge! Even if times are difficult, you get the feeling of moving in some direction, and this is good. Stasis is not good. Remember that.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):
Family, friends, events that surprise you; that’s what’s going on. These are unpredictable times, but you’re starting to hit your stride! You’re beginning to adapt to new circumstances without getting all bent out of shape. You like things a certain way, and you’ve had to make some pretty hefty compromises of late. It will turn out to your advantage, believe me! You have a reprieve for a little while; take full advantage of it.

Libra (September 23 - October 22):
Four planets moving into Leo this month shifts your focus considerably. What’s been left hanging now has the opportunity to right itself with your hard work and focus. That’s the hard part, right? Some things are in flux and where you want a definite answer, it’s not forthcoming. Don’t push the river or force anything. Keep your eyes open to the path of least resistance and go that way.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 22):
Coming now is a rather intense (what else!) time of reestablishing some old ties and shoring up loose ends. Four planets moving into Leo puts pressure on you to make a shift of some significance in the realm of work or education. You can be pretty laid back unless you feel you’ve been backed into a corner. But in your typical style, you’ll take the bull by the horns and rise to the occasion. Don’t withdraw and get broody because you’ll miss all the good stuff coming your way!

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 20):
Four planets moving into benevolent Leo this month and my goodness, are you being shined on! Now listen, don’t bother with people who are not nice. You are too quick to turn the other cheek and try to make peace. But in order for you to jockey yourself into the position you want, you’re going to need to focus your attention on what’s going right, on who’s listening to you from the heart. You can do that.

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19):
Another shift in planetary signs, more changes. For a little while this month the influence of shining Leo is prevalent. This means that if you come from a place of genuine generosity and goodwill, you’ll fly. If you stick a bunch of stipulations and expectations on everything you won’t fare as well. Extend yourself s bit, Cappie, and mean it. You have a good solid heart, don’t be afraid to use it!

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19):
Relationships and finances jump to the forefront of your life, and demand your attention. Are you a day late and a dollar short? If so, you’d better get better organized! Time management is essential now in order for you to be in a position to give your best. Reassess your discipline and don’t cling to old habits just because you’re used to it. Sometimes new habits must be learned, and also put into practice. Don’t keep so much in your head! Action speaks.

Pisces (February 20-March 20)
Now these Cancerian planets begin to move into fiery Leo and you’re ready to pull out the stops. But first we must address your health. Four planets move into Leo this month, falling in your sixth house of health. Get a checkup, fix what’s gone wrong. Leo rules the heart and spine, so make the changes necessary to ensure you’re healthy and then make your moves. Get your health attended to now. Once you get the all-clear, you can focus on a career change/expansion with a clear mind and good endurance.
