Celebrating its 11th year, the Money Smart Week® mission is to promote personal financial literacy.

Last year the American Library Association (ALA) joined in a partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to make Money Smart Week® @ your library a national initiative. Libraries of all types are partnering with community groups, financial institutions, government agencies, educational organizations and other financial experts to help consumers learn to better manage their personal finances.

As in traditional cooperative form, the island libraries have been working together to bring a terrific lineup of presenters on a variety of topics relating to personal finance to the San Juan Island Library, Orcas Island Library, and Lopez Island Library. Program topics include credit repair, elder fraud, new trends in retirement, budgeting, identity theft, reverse mortgages, and more. For a full schedule of events visit your local library or go to,, and

Besides these special sessions, the San Juan Island Library has two new finance and investment reference resources available online to San Juan Island Library card holders – Morningstar Investment Research Center and Value Line.

The Library used to carry print versions of these services, however, as you probably know, many print reference materials are being discontinued. Of course, Library patrons have been requesting that we subscribe to Morningstar and Value Line online for awhile. These finance and investment research databases are accessible remotely from home or work and, like many other online subscription services available to San Juan Island Library cardholders, may be accessed by authenticating with a SJI Library card number.

Morningstar is participating in Money Smart Week by offering special events for its library subscribers. San Juan Island Library users may attend these events online from home.
