Library and Museum Team Up

As you search the library’s online catalog, you may start seeing a notation that says “The Whale Museum.” The San Juan Island Library is partnering with our local world class institution to offer access to the museum’s extensive collection of books and documents on the topics of marine mammals, marine sciences and local natural history.

Christi Diamond, the museum’s Curator of Collections, is currently cataloging the books into the San Juan Island Library’s database. The process is expected to take about three weeks, and books will be available for use at The Whale Museum starting in December.

The museum’s library includes approximately 500 volumes on topics of considerable interest to local residents and visitors alike, including materials for both adults and children. Up until now, most people had no idea that such a collection exists on the island. Our goal with this project is to increase awareness of these resources, and encourage people to visit The Whale Museum for access to material that the public library doesn’t have.

One of the most exciting things about computer-based cataloging is that we can see the catalogs of thousands of libraries from the library or my home. Our collection is no longer limited to the physical items within our library building. Just knowing that a book exists, and may be available to borrow through Interlibrary Loan, is a giant step forward in information access; providing our patrons with information about another important library on the island is even better.

At first, the museum’s materials will be available only for reference work within the museum and by appointment. Regular hours and circulation policies are still being determined. If you would like more information about The Whale Museum’s collection, please contact Christi Diamond at 378-4710, extension 27.

Note: For all of you who are on tenterhooks about the library renovation, the second round of bids was much more successful. We hope to award the bid at the Board of Trustees’ meeting on Tuesday, and I plan to write a full update for next week’s column. Thank you for your patience!
