MORE COLUMNS

Request for Ideas

As I sit down to write this column I find myself thinking of all the different topics I could write about. I’ve already started a running list of ideas so that I don’t forget something important and so I have somewhere to go to when I’m not feeling particularly inspired. But I realized before I completely fill up the list with my ideas, I should get ideas from you the readers.

I see topics I have brainstormed as falling into three broad categories. There are the ones that have to do with our local library focusing on changes, programming, or special events. My first four columns were in this vein with my coming back to the library, the fair report, September Project, and Literary Salon. We always have plenty of activities going on around here and this column is a valuable way of keeping the community informed and updated.

Then there are the topics relating to more general library issues and philosophies. These can include how libraries work to protect intellectual freedom and privacy, current legislation impacting libraries, or national programs and initiatives.

And finally there are the topics centered on a specific fact or subject. These tend to be more fun and lighthearted. I present basic information on a particular matter and point to library resources in the print collection and online databases for further information.

I would love to hear from you about topics you are interested in and would like to see dealt with in this column. They don’t even have to fall neatly within my three categories. I can’t promise I will get to it immediately, but it will go on the list for future columns. If you think of something at another time that’s okay; this is not your only opportunity to offer suggestions. I am always open to ideas so please feel free to contact me at any time.

For me this column is a great way to connect with the community and to offer up something from the library. I hope to keep this meaningful, interesting, and relevant. I look forward to your input.
