Local Authors
As you browse along the shelves throughout the library you may notice something new on some of our books. We have been adding a little blue sticker with a pencil on the spine of certain books. This spine label also says Local Author. This is one way we are working to draw attention to our local authors and provide easier access to their works. The other thing we are doing that you would not notice while walking around the library is putting a Local author subject heading in the catalog record. This provides a way to search our online catalog specifically for local author works regardless of if you know a specific author’s name or title. Go to our catalog and select the Keyword(s) in subject search option in the drop down box and type in "local author." You will see the subject heading Local author as well as the number of records with the heading. Click on Local author and you will see a list of records. You can sort this list by author, title, or publication date. You can also limit the list to different types including fiction, non-fiction, or juvenile. Come in and we will be happy to show you the search. We are about half way through this project and have already marked about 130 items. We are including authors from all of San Juan County, not just San Juan Island. We have works of adult, teen, and children’s fiction. We have non-fiction about our local environment, birds, knitting, the Galapagos Islands, Ugandan mountain gorillas, the Gaza Strip, and rock ‘n’ roll. The interests and talents of our local community never cease to amaze me; be sure to check out some of their work! Thanks go to our Heidi Lewis for heading up this project. A selection of local author titles includes: Death on a Casual Friday: A Scotia MacKinnon Mystery by Sharon Duncan Duncan’s first book about Scotia MacKinnon a private detective on San Juan Island. Sunset Run by William Carli Captain Mondo isn't looking for trouble. He just wants to be left alone while he sails the world with Amy Wilson, the love of his life. A mystery set from the tropical South Sea Islands to British Columbia. Nautical Highways: Ferries of the San Juan Islands by Robert Demar and Robin Atkins. Black and white photographs of riding the ferry picturing passengers, commuters, children, ferry crews and dramatic scenery taken by Demar with text by Atkins. Why We Garden: Cultivating a Sense of Place by Jim Nollman Nollman defines gardening as a nurturing process and shares “a month-by-month record of his gardening experiences.” Outbreak!: Plagues that Changed History by Bryn Barnard Barnard explores six diseases that changed our world and the course of history.
