More Books, Please!
Shannan Sword our Youth Services Librarian recently wrote an article about Teen Read Week. But this week it’s our younger patrons turn. November 13-19th is the 87th annual National Children’s Book Week. The theme for this year’s celebration is “More Books, Please!” This was started in 1919 as a way to introduce children to new authors and new ideas through books. The first Children’s Book Week brought parents, teachers, librarians, and parents together “to talk about books and reading and, out of our knowledge and love of books, to put the cause of children’s reading squarely before the whole community and, community by community, across the whole nation. For a great nation is a reading nation.” (Frederic Melcher, co-founder of Children’s Book Week, 1919). The ability to read as well as a love of reading is the best gift we can and must give our children. Be sure to take some time with your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or neighbor to share a story together this week. Read a book out loud together. Draw a picture of a character or place from a story. Act out a favorite scene. When I was young one of my favorite things to do with my sister’s was to act out stories from books for my parents and any neighbors we could convince to come over. We got our best material from Louis Sachar’s Sideways Stories from Wayside School. Or take a child to the library to spend time looking through our books and to take a few home. This week at our library we have the following programs for children: Monday – After School Read Aloud with Kathy Babbitt for elementary aged children from 3:15 – 4:15. Kathy has been reading aloud from Gail Carson Levine’s book Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg starting on October 16th. If you have missed the first weeks, it’s not too late to still enjoy the story! Tuesday – Make a Book Workshop for grades 1-5 aged children from 3:30 - 4:30. Thursday – Lapsit and Linger for infants, toddlers, and their caregivers from 10:00 – 11:00. Come for songs, stories, fingerplays, and rhymes and stay for play and snacks. Friday – Preschool Storytime for preschool aged children and their caregivers from 10:30 – 11:00. Children’s Book Week is backed by The Children’s Book Council.
