Love of books rekindled in Colorado

I am posting my column this week from Colorado, having just attended a fantastic literary event that has once again fired my enthusiasm for books and reading. I had the great good fortune to see and hear five wonderful authors:

  • Elizabeth McCracken
  • Gail Tsukiyama
  • Bharati Mukherjee
  • Alan Lightman
  • Rick Bragg.

The love of reading, for me, was born early. I like to say that reading was my first addiction, and also it is my most lasting one. I still remember going to the public library in rural Ohio as a small child. I remember spending hours on end lost in the worlds created by those mythical gods, authors. I am still in awe of anyone who can muster the strength to put a little piece of themselves into words, on paper, and out into the world for others to know.

One of the great pleasures in my life is to discover another person who is passionate about reading. Some of my favorite conversations include the phrases "Have you read _______?" and "If you love that author, then you must try _______."

As we move into the more interior part of our year, many of us have more time to read. One of my goals at the library is to foster reading in any way we can, and I know that many people are at a loss when it comes to choosing what to read. For this reason, the library is starting a forum for trading book recommendations, open to all. The monthly gathering will take place on the third Thursday of every month, and will be known as the What Have You Read Lately? group.

Starting at 7 pm, and taking place in the chairs at the back of the main library, this group will be an informal discussion with participation from any and all who have a book to suggest. There will be light refreshments donated by the Friends of the Library, and our first meeting will take place on October 17. I will come armed with a list of books to talk about, but my hope is that will the common people will rise up and stage a coup.

I hope to see you there.
