Librarians in Seattle

This week over 10,000 leaders in the world of libraries will descend upon Seattle for over 2,500 discussion groups, meetings, and events as well as more than 450 exhibits featuring the latest in library services and technology. This is the American Library Associations (ALA) annual business meeting where they plan to tackle topics "ranging from the future of knowledge to the best books for children and young adults."

This is also the meeting where the top youth books for the past year are announced. Award committees meet behind locked doors and decide the best books of 2006 with particular attention on youth readers. Sometimes referred to as the "Academy Awards" of youth literature ALA hosts this annual event, announcing winners of multiple awards including the Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Newbery, and Printz Medals.

The official time of announcement is Monday, January 22, starting at 7:45 am with the press release listing all the winners available online by 10 a.m. PST at www.ala.org. Be sure to look for this!

Our very own Youth Services Librarian, Shannan, will be very busy in Seattle this week. Besides being an ALA, YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association), PLA (Public Library Association), and ALSC (Association of Library Service to Children) member she is an ex-officio member of the YALSA board, Chair of the YALSA Orders and By-Laws Committee, Convener on the Teaching Young Adult Literature Discussion Group, and Representative on the ALA Literacy Assembly. As you can imagine she has a very packed schedule.

I will also spend one day checking out the vendors and seeing what might be a good fit for us up here on our island. This is a great opportunity to gather more information, meet with other librarians, and discover new opportunities for growth without having to travel far.

We plan to bring back some great ideas and new directions for our library.

P.S. We are closed Monday January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. See you on Tuesday!
