Overdues
Seems an appropriate topic for this "View from the Library" as I am infamously overdue in submitting it! With Laura still away, I said I’d write the column for a couple of weeks – but the reason why I’m overdue in posting this column is the exact reason you’ll be glad to know I’m not going to write about remembering to bring your books back on time. What caused the writing of the "View from the Library" to fly from my mind you ask? This past weekend, I was one of about a dozen local adults and teens who underwent training to become "4H Challenge Facilitators" to provide programs and support for youth through the challenges of life. This training finished late Sunday afternoon and left all of us who took part with much to think about. It’s my job – and part of the mission and goals of the library to support the youth and all members of our community. We do this in the library in a variety of ways, though most especially by providing all the information we can to anyone who asks. As a Youth Services Librarian, I am constantly thinking about what I am doing to support the young people of our community – and what more I could and maybe should be doing. Learning the 4H Challenge philosophy just gave me even more wonderful avenues to consider. The library’s focus is on providing free and open access to information, but also on providing a safe place of community for all – young and old alike. And isn’t that about the coolest thing you can imagine? It’s thoughts like this that make me love what I do more and more.
