Trustee Retreat
How have you been spending these last few rainy Saturdays? Braving the outdoors and getting gardens started? Or just giving in to the weather and curling up all day with a good book? The Library Board of Trustees, Shannan, and I met on Saturday March 17th for a retreat. It was horribly rainy and dark outside which meant it was the perfect sort of day to meet inside with a cup of coffee and a scone and sit back to talk about the library. Once per year the Trustees plan a retreat to talk about some of the larger issues facing the library. By doing this we are able to discuss certain issues in a more in depth and focused fashion than we would be able to in our regular monthly meetings. Each year the agenda varies depending on what specific larger issues are facing the library. Some years it is a very concrete planning retreat resulting in an action plan with detailed steps and timelines. Some years the discussion is more general resulting in brainstormed lists and identified areas where we need to gather more information. This year our five member board of trustees made up of Ruth Offen, Tom Metke, Richard Civille, Susan Rosenberg, and Fred Henley met in the Friday Harbor House conference room with facilitator David Bentley. Our two big agenda items focused on our finances and our space. We discussed our budget and how restrictions from Initiative 747 are currently and will continue to impact our financial circumstance. We discussed how we are fitting into our space after the remodel and what needs we still have and anticipate having. It was a productive retreat that helped focus our energy and determine priorities. I walked away with brainstormed lists and identified areas for additional information in hand. Thanks to Friday Harbor House for graciously providing the space (and the coffee and scones!). Thanks also go to Bob Schwartzberg for offering his expertise in preparing for the retreat. To learn more about the board and issues facing the library the public is invited to attend our regular board meetings on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:00-8:00 pm in the library meeting room. *Don’t forget this Friday the 30th is Linda’s last day. We hope you can join us for her retirement party on Friday from 3:30-6 p.m. here in the library.
