Mid-Year Progress Report

Ah, the performance evaluation. It strikes dread in the hearts of many. I am currently in the process of doing annual evaluations for most of our staff as almost all our hiring seems to happen in the late spring/early summer. This evaluation period has made me assess how I am doing in terms of meeting the short range goals I set for 2007. At the start of the year I wrote a column stating three areas I would focus on during the year. These three areas were: catalog, adult programming, and space. I am happy to report we are making real progress in each of these areas!

As I recently wrote we have begun the process of migrating to a new cataloging system called Millennium. Our Technology Specialist, Floyd, has been working hard to prepare all our records for the new system. Throughout this process I have said more than once I am glad I don’t have his job. Luckily for us he’s enjoying the challenge of mastering the new system requirements. Our first live training for staff will happen in July when we will a test lab set up upstairs. After the first staff training we will evaluate the initial settings and start making it ours. The final dates of implementation schedule have not been set, but we are looking at a go live date for the fall.

Adult programming is moving full steam ahead. Our Live and Learn series is in its second round of programs using the theme Going Places. Creating this new series has been a lot of fun for us and has helped to form many new connections with patrons and the community by offering this range of learning opportunities. Our Programming Coordinator, Adrienne, is already setting up programs for the fall. And finally space. One of the first things I heard a lot about when coming back to the library was how the remodel changed the spaces and overall feel of the library. One big concern was the circulation desk and the lack of space for checking materials out. I felt we had given the tables enough of a try and have been working with woodworker, Mark Cunningham and architect, El Baylis to design a new circulation desk. I am excited to report we will have a new circulation desk installed the first week of July. We are also currently picking out paint for the exterior window and door trim of our building. This work will be completed by the end of the summer. I hope these two initial changes will help us settle in a little better.

I’m excited about what’s happening and how we are progressing. I can’t wait for the final evaluation at the end of the year.
