Report on Washington, D.C.
posted 07/02/2007
As I wrote earlier this month, I attended this year’s conference funded in full thanks to a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, WebJunction, and our state library. The grant was part of Rural Library Sustainability Project that sent 150 rural librarians from across the nation to the annual conference, many including myself for the first time. The first day of the conference was devoted to a forum with my fellow rural librarians. We spent a full day sharing experiences and learning about resources available to us. I made new contacts and friends and walked away with a couple of great ideas for our library. The next two days I spent attending various conference sessions. These sessions included changes in cataloging practices, ways to evaluate library services, types of new technologies, and transformations of library spaces as presented by leaders in the field. As you can imagine I brought back a list of things to do both big and small. Apart from the conference I did manage to find a little time to attend an open house at the Library of Congress and was suitably impressed with the grandeur of the building and collections. I also snuck in a couple of early morning runs that took me by some of the great memorials and monuments of the city. Thanks again to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, WebJunction, and our state library for offering this valuable opportunity. Thank you also to the library staff for keeping everything going at our library while I was away.
