Trading Spaces

posted 07/09/2007
The first of our big changes for 2007 is complete; you will notice it the moment you walk in the door. As planned this last week local builder Mark Cunningham installed a new circulation desk. Mark worked with El Baylis, Shannan, and me to design a desk that fit in with the look of the library but that would offer more work space.

Besides the fact that there is a new desk, there are also a couple of changes that accompany the desk that will directly impact patron services. First, the reference and the circulation desks are combined into one desk. This will allow staff to better assist volunteers with checking materials in and out.

Second, we have a place to return books inside as well as outside. You can continue to use the outside book drop throughout the day but we can now accommodate inside returns. These changes will result in better coverage on the desk and improve overall service.

Of course we are still settling into the new desk and getting it organized. Starting next week we will begin shifting shelves and tables around in the front of the library to take advantage of additional spaces created with the new desk. This will take a little while as we see what works and how we can best use the new front area.

One result of the remodel and putting in this desk in is a keen awareness of space and how it affects people’s perceptions and patterns of use. A few related titles have caught my eye in passing for this reason. These titles include:

  • Architecture of Happiness by Alain De Botton

  • Home: A Short History of an Idea by Witold Rybczynski

  • Colorscapes: Inspiring Palettes for the Home by Susan Sargent

  • Feng Shui Handbook: How to Create a Healthier Living and Working Environment by Lam Kam Chuen

Stop by our new desk for help finding these or other titles or just to let us know what you think of it.
